Baishan AWS is partnered with Annie Wright Schools (AWS) in Tacoma, Washington and prepares students for higher education abroad.  Our Weekly Update is an opportunity for us to share all of the great learning experiences that take place both in and outside of our classroom, and is a testament to our commitment to communication with our parents as well as the community.

From the Director  项目主任总结

Thank you parents!  Last week, I wrote about our school's extra emphasis on making sure students have done the best they can ahead of the upcoming Semester 1 reports.  We cancelled extra-curricular activities this week to allow students more time to make last-minute submissions and corrections before the grades become permanent.  Happily, our teachers are seeing students utilize this time by reporting to teachers and submitting late work and corrections.  I believe students are more conscientious about their grades because of the encouragement by both parents and teachers.

首先,非常感谢家长们对我们工作的支持!上周,我在周讯中特别强调要帮助并确保学生在即将到来的第一学期成绩报告截止之前尽最大努力。我们取消了本周的课外活动,以便让学生有更多的时间,在成绩报告截止之前,尽可能多地提交和改正之前的作业 。令人高兴的是,我们看到学生们充分利用这段时间主动向老师汇报并改正和提交了作业。我相信学生们对自己成绩更加认真和积极的态度是源于家长和老师们的积极鼓励。  


I also want to thank our teachers for providing multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate what they have learned, often grading, then re-grading, and offering personalized help sessions for those in need.  Thank you teachers!

Grades are being finalized this week.  Reports will be printed Monday.  Please take time to read the very specific comments prepared by the teachers and discuss your child's academic progress.  Students can become better learners in Semester 2. Students' grades can get better.

Talent Show

Baishan AWS has many talented students.  Students will have an opportunity to perform Friday, January 29th in front of their peers.  As of this writing, we have five performances scheduled, including students from Baishan AWS and Annie Wright Schools Tacoma.

Humanities with Ms. Brauer 人文科学


Our Grade 9 geographers are studying biomes and ecosystems this week, and working on making corrections to their unit test on water resources.

Our Grade 10/11 historians are continuing their study of the Ottomans, focusing this week on Mehmet IIs siege of Constantinople. Twenty-three attacks on this spectacular walled city failed. What did Mehmet do differently that earned him the title Fatih, the Conqueror?

Our Grade 11 AP geographers are starting their study of political geography this week, learning the foundational concepts of sovereignty. How do states form, structure themselves, govern their territory, and defend themselves? Why do some states fall apart?

Chinese Zhongkao with Mr. Zhan 中文

This week, the students of grade 9 analyzed the problems reflected in the final test, reflected on the shortcomings of the previous period of study, and made up for the defects in knowledge and skills. In addition, the students designed a "collection name" and wrote a preface for their work collection this semester.


Visual Arts with Mr. Brandt 视觉艺术







The Painting and Drawing students are advancing on their 2-point linear perspective artworks.  Students are applying their color studies to their works, making sure that they discipline themselves to the colors studied.  All of the students seem especially engaged in this unit. Make sure you read next week's Update to see the finished artworks.

Students' weekly sketchbook submissions continue to get better.  Students are responding to the advice by incorporating various materials, composing their space, and adding a personal interest.  See several submissions to the theme of Items from your Kitchen Drawer.

English Language Arts with Ms. Jia and Ms. Jenn 英语语言文学


It was a bit quiet in the English classrooms this week. Student spent the last week of Unit 2 taking the opportunity to submit corrections and revisions to work completed in the unit. A new semester and a new unit begins next week for students in all three grade levels.  

本周英语教室里有点安静。学生利用这周时间修改和提交了第二单元所需要更正和补交的作业。下周,三个年级的学生将开始新学期和新单元的学习。  


Ninth graders will turn their attention to love and family relationships and how they are depicted in the drama West Side Story.

In tenth grade, we will focus on how writers use conflict to drive stories and poetry, focusing on specifically on war poetry, fiction, and memoir. 

九年级学生的学习重点将转向感情和家庭关系,以及这种情感和家庭关系是如何在戏剧《西区故事》中的描写和刻画的。

Eleventh grade will dive into how language is used to divide and control, reading the novel 1984, and considering recent events in the American political system to answer the question, "How do we know what's true?"

Chinese Literature & Culture with Ms. Emilia  中国文学



        本周中文课,我们一起回顾了这一学期所学习的不同单元的主要内容,完成了读书报告,分享了阅读带来的收获和心得体会,并进行了期末测验。同学们的阅读分析能力、总结陈述能力和写作探究能力都有不同程度的进步和提升。很高兴在大家的共同努力下,我们圆满完成了本学期的学习任务并取得了不错的成绩。下个学期继续努力,更上一层楼!

This week. In Chinese classes, we reviewed the main contents of different units learned in this semester, completed the reading project report, shared the results and experience brought by reading, and conducted the final exam. Students' reading analysis ability, summary and statement ability and writing inquiry ability have different degrees of progress and improvement. I am very glad that with the joint efforts of all of you, we have successfully completed the learning task of this semester and achieved good results. Next semester please continue to work hard, to be a higher level!


Physical and Health Education with Coach Faamamafa 体育

This week we get the students to enjoy playing badminton one on one, two on two and three on three. They be able to have fun and develop their badminton skills. Other student play basketball work on their dribble, moving and throwing skills. They were also play against each other and as a team. Before the end of the class we separated into two teams and play frisbee, students get to develop skills and communication on how to work together as a team and improve their offence and defence. After the students circle up and do stretching before our class finished.

本周我让学生们参与了羽毛球单打、羽毛球双打,以及羽毛球混合打的活动。学生们都很开心,并且提升了他们的羽毛球技巧。 喜欢打篮球的学生本周也着重练习了控球、运球以及投篮技巧。学生们之间也进行了比赛和团队合作。在课程结束之前,我们分成两队来进行了飞盘游戏。在这个过程中,学生们培养了不同的技巧,以及作为一个团队如何在一起合作和交流,同时也提高了进攻与防守的技巧。最后学生们围成一圈做了一些伸展活动。



Physics with Mr. Kytle 物理


This week the students are looking at Gravitational Field Strength with Distance. How does distance impact the force of Gravity? The students are looking at data taken from a NASA probe which compared the weight of an object at different distances from the Earth. The students are using this data to determine how distance effects the strength of Gravity. We are also contemplating whether or not other sources of Gravity within the Solar System might have had an impact on the probes data. 本周物理课,学生们研究了引力场强度与距离的关系。距离如何影响重力?学生们正在分析来自美国宇航局探测器的数据,该探测器比较了一个物体在离地球不同距离处的重量。学生们用这些数据来分析并确定距离是如何影响重力强度 的。我们也在考虑太阳系内的其他重力源是否会对探测器的数据产生影响。

 

The students are also finishing up any left over assignments as well as reviewing last weeks exam. The students were also given a chance to create something to enhance our Learning Environment in exchange for additional points. 除此之外,学生们也利用本周时间补交了一些之前未完成的作业,同时改正了上周考试中的错题。学生们也被给予机会来创作一些东西来加强和提高我们的学习环境和动力,从而获得额外的分数。  



6 - What most people forget to understand is that as a Spaceship increases in Mass so does the amount of Force needed to get it into orbit. The best way to overcome this is to create a Space Elevator. The students will be researching this after we complete our look at this weeks course content. 大多数学生没有注意的是,随着飞船质量的增加,进入轨道所需的力也随之增加。克服这一问题的最好办法是建造一个太空电梯。学生们将在完成本周课程内容后对此进行研究。


Chemistry with Ms. Jiajia 化学课


In this week, students had 2 periods of self investigating and self-learning for unit 8 acids and bases. Some part of contents they were taught before. They showed their independent learning skills.  And then we together worked on three theories of acids and bases, calculations of PH and POH, conversions of concentration of [H+] and [OH-]  properties of weak and strong acids & bases.

这个星期,学生进行了两小节课的自我探究和自我学习,就酸与碱这一章。有部分内容,之前有讲过。学生们展示了独立的自学与探究能力。然后,我们一起学习了三个酸碱理论,PHPOH的计算,[H+] and [OH-]浓度转换,探讨了强酸强碱的性质。


University Guidance and TOEFL with Ms. Du 美国大学升学指导课


This week, we continued dealing with PSAT - the scientific articles, mainly focusing on how to get the overall structure and guess meaning in context. It's clear that for certain students, it's not only the difficulty of the passage but also the learning attitude that affected their performance. In TOEFL class, we reviewed the vocabulary with the topics of arts and literature and then practiced listening conversations on those topics. Students are learning how to catch the key information, which is very important for them to succeed in this test.

本周,我们继续讨论PSAT——科学文章,主要关注如何在上下文中获得整体结构和猜测意义。很明显,对于某些学生来说,影响他们成绩的不仅是文章的难度,还有学习态度。在托福课上,我们复习了艺术和文学主题的词汇,然后练习了这些主题的听力对话。学生们正在学习如何抓住关键信息,这对他们在这次考试中取得成功是非常重要的。
