We celebrated our students this week at Baishan AWS. During the Thursday Talent Show and Semester 1 Academic Awards ceremony, we were able to reflect on our wonderful students.

In addition to the Semester 1 Most Improved and Academic Achievement Awards, our ceremony consisted of a social activity, two music performances . Ms. Jenn Roth asked the audience to interact with each other by challenging students and faculty to find other people who have met the listed activities in their life. Example include finding someone in the room who have taken dance lesson, played an instrument, and performed on stage. This was a great opportunity for the Baishan AWS students and faculty to interact with Tacoma AWS students and Baishan School 8th graders -- all while practicing their English language skills.

Next was the announcement of the Most Improved academic awards. Several students made notable improvements since the beginning of school, many of whom improved in all of their subjects.

Blue Ties Jessica, Mary, Rain, Tracy were next on stage with their song. Well done to these four students for their song and rap rendition of Death Bed.

Students with the highest percentage in all of their classes were then recognized by their subject teachers. These students had the overall top score in each of their classes for Semester 1.

The audience was then mesmerized by our guest student from Annie Wright School Tacoma Lily -- a Green Tie student who has joined us from our campus in Tacoma, USA. She dazzled the audience with her piano rendition of Blue Bird.

Lastly, the three students in each grade who had the top grade-point average for Semester 1 were recognized. Congratulations to Blue Tie Jessica Ji, Green Tie Max Sun, and Red Tie Billy Fan

All students are encouraged to work hard in Semester 2. Baishan AWS will celebrate our students' accomplishments at the end of the academic year.

Baishan AWS would like to thank the Baishan International 8th Graders and Advisors for joining us this week.

Green Tie Katherine completes her material study.

All Art students are in the middle of their study part of their Comparative Study unit. Students will begin to have different needs based on their self-selected topics. Students are learning the important distinctions between primary sources and secondary sources. Whenever possible, the students should find sources to study that are in their real world -- the life they walk through and live in. Students who choose primary sources -- the items that they can see first-hand -- are more likely to be more expressive and unique. These qualities are fundamental to developing artists.

Next week, students will be challenged to explore the limits of the materials. Students will study the interactions between paints and charcoal. They will study how to best use them in a way that meets that intentions, as defined in their assignment several weeks ago.

In Grade 9 we’ve launched into our study of Human Geography! We started from the origin of the first humans and their earliest migrations, but are focusing this week on the birth of agriculture, a pivotal innovation of human existence. In what ways did agriculture benefit humans, and in what ways did it plant the seeds (wink wink) of some of our most intransigent problems and challenges?

In our continuing study of the Age of Exploration and Disruption, our Grade 10/11 historians are applying their skills in figuring out author’s purpose, evaluating context, and assessing bias using both written and photographic primary sources from the colonial period in Africa. We’ve also discussed the triangle trade and the devastating impacts of the Atlantic slave trade this week.

Our Grade 11 AP geographers are continuing their study of agriculture, examining the benefits and costs of the Green Revolution, and studying the massive global industry that modern commercial agriculture has become since. We used bananas as our commodity lens for examining economies of scale and international supply chains. Next up… chicken sandwiches!

Mathematics with Mr. Guo 数学

Grade 9 students started a new unit of study, Trigonometry. First, we reviewed simplifying square roots and Pythagorean Theorem. Then students learned to write sine, cosine, and tangent ratios and use trigonometric ratios to solve right triangles in applied problems.

Grade 10 students tried to describe and compare sets of data using the measure of central tendency. They learned two new measures of variation, variance and standard deviation, to show how much data values deviate from the mean.

Grade 11 students extended their knowledge in Counting Principle. They tackled harder questions in Permutation and Combination, which required careful thinking in logic. They also reviewed the multiplication rule and addition rule of probability.

He said: books are the ladder of human progress.

He said: I throw myself on books like a hungry man on bread.

He also created a shocking artistic image - the petrel.

He was the Soviet writer Gorky. This week, the grade 9th studied his prose poem the petrel. Through the study, the students understand the great role of this prose poem in inspiring the people to fight against the background of the times, and also understand the effect of "symbol" as a means of expression.

This week in English students mostly collaborated or worked independently on projects intended to encourage a deeper understanding of the themes in our unit texts. After completing the reading of West Side Story, Blue Ties embarked on a project intended to explore how change is made through art. Each student reflected on a societal problem that resonated with them and began work on a painting, drawing, poem, short story, or short film that will draw attention to the problem in a unique way. Green Ties went back to The Complete Maus to examine themes, structure, and larger questions about how human beings behave toward one another when in conflict. The study will culminate in a Socratic Seminar next week. Red Ties continued work on their dystopian world building, as well as character and plot development for their upcoming short film. In Creative Writing, students finished writing the first draft of one scene "starring" the character they had created. Students were then able to provide peer feedback to each other using our rules that to be helpful, constructive feedback must be honest, specific, and kind.

Based on the study of the development process and teaching characteristics of education in different periods, this week the grade10th students studied and discussed different educational viewpoints and teaching methods, such as "Teaching without distinction", "Teaching students in accordance with their aptitude" and "Life is education". The students shared their own views and opinions, found out the advantages and disadvantages through comparative analysis, and had a more in-depth and comprehensive understanding of "education".

In the Chinese class of Grade 11, we began to learn complex sentences this week, including the concept of complex sentences, the classification criteria of complex sentences and 10 different types of complex sentences with related words. In addition, for the writing exercise, we start with the analysis and comments of current hot news, learn how to logically build the framework of writing, and initially write the outline of the article.

Physics with Mr. Kytle 物理

Greetings! 大家好

There are a couple of interesting things happening in Physics. The first project we completed was a look at Physical Forces, which I mentioned last week. The students were given a chance to test their knowledge and get some fresh air by competing in a paper airplane challenge. I am happy to announce that Katherine won the competition by having her airplane fly the farthest. I have added some pictures below for reference.

The next part of this Unit, I am having the student complete a Physics challenge. It is the same Physics challenge I had to complete when I was in High School. The students are given a ball and a grid of paper on the wall. The students have to get the ball from the top left corner to the bottom right corner in at a minimum, one minute. That is, the ball must take at least one minute to get from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. I have added a preliminary photo below with more to come next week.

Picture1.png

This explains the Physics behind flight and how we can do a simple demonstration to observe these forces.

Chemistry with Ms. Jiajia 化学课

the-collision-theory-and-activation-energy-n.jpg

This week, students were focusing on Kinetics including Collision Theory and Model, Reaction rates and Reaction law. Chemical reactions can occur at significantly different speeds or rates. For example, rusting is a very slow reaction that may take place over many years, but a chemical reaction as part of an explosion may take place within just fractions of a second. The rate of a reaction can be determined by either monitoring the change (decrease) in concentration of reactants over time, or alternatively, monitoring the change (increase) in concentration of products over time.

Students were trying to build on explanations and representations by constructing and describing rate laws consistent with experimental evidence.

University Guidance and TOEFL with Ms. Du

This week, G10s and G11s updated information on SCOIR, including activities and achievements. Some students have many talents and interests, but they felt reluctant when writing them down. The reason is that they said hadn't got any award. Actually, students are encouraged to write down every activity in which they have participated in high school to prove to the American universities that they are well-rounded students, not those who just focus on academics. Also, application requirements are flexible. Don't be too results-oriented. Interest and passion in one particular area can be proven by persistency and consistency.

Speaking of personal essay, G11 started writing the first draft and G10 began choosing the topic and writing a passage with 200-250 words.
