I want to thank all of the parents for meeting with me and our Associate Head, Ms. Susan Bauska, these past two weeks. I stated last week that our parents are generally pleased with the level of rigor in our classes and how their child is performing this year. These were the same reactions this past week as well.

 

首先,非常感谢所有的家长在过去的两周里与美国安妮怀特副校长苏珊·鲍斯卡女士和我的会面。上期周讯中我提到家长们对我们严格的办学以及他们的孩子在今年的表现普遍感到满意,这周的反馈也是一样的。

 

While we are very proud of what we are doing here at Baishan AWS, I know that we are only just beginning. We continue to look at data and gather input from all stakeholders, including parents, students, leaders, and eductors. We keep adding possible activities and classes to meet our students' growing needs.

Binghamton University Visit - November 1   11月1日  美国Binghamton大学申请讲座


Representatives from Binghamton University will visit our 11th graders, and possibly students from Amerasia, to introduce the school and application process. Binghamton is the number one-ranked public university in New York state.

Binghamton大学的代表将为我们11年级的学生进行大学申请指导,美亚国际学校的部分学生也会参加讲座,大学代表将会向学生介绍学校和大学申请的过程。Binghamton 大学是纽约州排名第一的公立大学。


AP Exam registration - November  15 deadline  AP考试注册  11月15日截止


AP students will need to log in to Prometrics to register and pay for AP Exam. Mainland China uses a different system than College Board. AP学生需要登录Prometrics网站注册并支付AP考试费用。中国大陆采用与大学理事会不同的制度。

The IB DP Math students worked hard this week to prepare for the first summative unit assessment. They used technology for complex calculations and immediate feedback. After the unit on Trigonometry, we will position our shapes in the coordinate plane. The next unit discusses coordinate geometry, lines, and Voronoi diagrams. 本周在IB DP数学课上,学生们努力学习,为第一次总结性单元评估做准备。学生们利用工具进行了复杂的计算和即时反馈。在三角学单元之后,我们将学习在坐标平面上定位图形。下一单元我们将讨论坐标图形、线和Voronoi图。

The Geometry students reviewed theorems about angles in polygons and practically demonstrated their validity. They are approaching the end of the unit on Parallel and Perpendicular Lines. As the students are learning mathematical concepts, they also focus on vocabulary and learning the specific mathematical terminology. 本周在几何课上,我们复习了关于多边形中角度的定理,并实际证明了它们的有效性。我们马上就要结束平行和垂直线这一单元 ,学生在学习数学概念的同时,也关注了英文词汇和特定的数学术语的学习。

The Algebra 2 students analyzed graphs of absolute value functions and graphs of two-variable inequalities with the help of technology. They also learned ways to display and analyze statistical data and make predictions. 在代数2课上,学生们借助工具分析了绝对值函数图和二元不等式图。我们在课上还学习了分析统计数据以及进行预测的方法。

This week our students closed Cell Biology unit with a traditional hands-on experimental work to develop the internal assessment essential parts of dynamics of scientific knowledge. It also plays a key role in the teaching and learning of science. Molecular Biology unit started pretty strong with molecules to metabolism. 本周在生物课上,学生们动手做了实验,结束了细胞生物学这一单元 ,实验是科学知识动力学内部评估的基本部分,在科学教学中也起着关键作用。之后我们学习了分子生物学这一单元中分子和新陈代谢的知识。

This week our students demonstrated knowledge in Chemistry, creating connection between real world and the unit content in Chemical Reactions. They presented relevant chemical reactions and practiced public speaking skills. We are improving our Scientific method with investigation work in physical and chemical changes on different materials. 本周在科学课上,我们学习了一些化学知识,在真实世界和化学反应单元内容之间建立了联系。学生们展示了相关的化学反应,并练习了演讲技巧。我们正在通过调查不同材料的物理和化学变化来改进我们的科学方法。

AP Physics 1  AP物理


Students learned about Kinetic energy, Potential energy (including elastic and gravitational),Energy in systems, Energy transfers. They also studied about the Conservative and non-conservative nature of forces. 本周在AP物理课上,学生们学习了动能,势能(包括弹性和引力),系统中的能量,能量转移。 学生们还探究了力的保守和非保守性质。

Various examples for kinetic energy were discussed and also presented by the students. They learned that how the energy stored in spring can be used for work. 此外,学生们还学习并讨论了了动能的各种例子,他们学会了如何将储存在弹簧中的能量用于工作。

Individuals and Societies with Mr. Durbin 人文科学


This week in Social and Cultural Anthropology we learned about evolution and evolutionism.  We ended the week with a discussion about evolution as a theory.  Next week we will be investigating globalism with a special focus on the key concept, materiality.  Our area of inquiry focus will be on production, exchange, and consumption as we look into supply chains.

This week in American History we learned about the causes of the American Revolution.  Britain's failure in policy making after the French and Indian War which caused Americans to revolt.  We ended our week with a classroom wide debate role play in which students took on the roles of Loyalists and Patriots as they debated whether they, British colonists, should declare independence.  At the end of the debate, the students voted unanimously for independence.  Next week we will learn about the American Revolution. 本周在美国历史课上,我们了解了美国革命的原因。法国和印度战争后,英国在政策制定上的失败导致了美国人的反抗。本周结束时,我们进行了一场角色扮演的辩论,学生们在辩论英国殖民者是否应该宣布独立时扮演了忠诚者和爱国者的角色。辩论结束时,学生们一致投票赞成独立。下周我们将学习美国革命。

PE and Fitness with Coach López 体育健身

The Grade 9 and 10 students have been focusing on two of the basic basketball basic skills this week, dribbling and shooting. In order to improve their shooting form, the students are working in an assignment for which they needed to record themselves shooting in slow motion. After doing research about which are the key aspects of a proper shooting form, the students have starting analyzing and comparing it with theirs. The use of technology is very present in today’s sports scene, and it’s important that our students learn how to use it to improve their performance. They have also been involved in shooting and dribbling drills, which have helped to make them feel confident in their game.

The grades 11 and 12 students continue developing their fitness level in the weight room. They are not only lifting weights, they are also designing and following their own workout routines, which are then collected and supervised by the PE teachers.  本周11年级和12年级的学生继续在健身室锻炼身体。学生们不仅进行了力量练习,还在体育老师的指导和监督下,设计并坚持了自己的锻炼计划。



Chinese Literature & Culture with Ms. Emilia  中国文学

继儒家思想之后,本周中国语言和文化课学习了道家的主张和观点。以老子和庄子为代表的道家学派,提倡 “出世之学”, “道法自然”和“无为而治”。学习《道德经》,可以更好地帮助我们理解老子朴素的辩证法思想。接下来,我们会学习庄子及《故事二则》,体会道家对个体精神层面的追求和重视。

Following Confucianism, the students of Chinese language and culture class learned the ideas and views of Taoism. The Taoist school represented by Laozi and Zhuangzi advocates " Keeping away from society", "Taoism follows nature" and "Governing by inaction". Studying The Scripture of Ethics can help us better understand Lao Tzu's simple dialectics. Next, we will learn the Two stories of Zhuangzi to experience the Taoist pursuit and attention to the individual spiritual level.

         IBDP中文课我们重点分析了《茶馆》第一幕和第二幕里面的不同社会背景以及深刻的内涵和主题。结合作品文本,探究了清朝必然灭亡的原因,军阀混战对社会和民众造成的灾难,以及特殊历史时期封建主义、帝国主义和资本主义对旧中国的不同影响。同学们结合文中示例,有层次地深入分析,由点及面,再加以讲解分享,提升了分析能力和语言表达能力。

In DP Chinese class, we mainly analyzed the different social backgrounds, profound connotations and themes in act 1 and act 2 of Teahouse. Combined with the text of the work, exploring the reasons for the inevitable demise of the Qing Dynasty, the disasters caused by the scuffle of warlords to the society and the people, and the different effects of feudalism, imperialism and capitalism on old China in the special historical period. In combination with the examples in the text, the students made a hierarchical and in-depth analysis, explained and shared from point to surface, improved their analytical ability and language expression ability.
