Friday Update for October 18th, 2019

Dear Baishan AWS Parents, Students, and Friends,

We are rapidly approaching the end of October, and our second month in school. We hope that our families will be able to attend the International Day event at QAIS this Saturday. We are also happy that many of our students will take part in this event, and learn the values of service and charity upon which the event is based.

We are looking forward to seeing you all next week for our parent-teacher conferences which will be held on the 24th and 25th of October. We will do our best to meet your scheduling needs, and work with our staff to be as flexible for our families as possible. Remember too that our first set of report cards will be sent to families on the 4th of November.

Each day we learn more about our students, and how they are learning. We do notice that students often have a great desire to play games on their computers. Our parents should know that we work very hard to monitor computer use, and want our students to take part in the “real world” as opposed to the digital one as much as possible. We hope that our families also will work to take part in the lives of their children in an active way over the weekends, rather than allowing kids to spend hours each week playing on a computer.

My dad had a small sign on our refrigerator when I was growing up. It said, “The most important thing to spend on your kids is time”.

Looking forward to seeing you all later next week.

The 9th grade students had a challenge day, competing in teams to solve four puzzles that required them to apply their growing knowledge of plate tectonics and the structure of the earth. Achievement unlocked! We're moving on to landforms now...

The 10th grade has been studying Native Americans as a test case for evaluating historical sources -- which ones can we trust, and when do we have to ask more questions and find more support? How can we tell the difference between a reliable source and fake news?

Math 数学

In Accelerated Algebra II, students began their study of quadratics by analyzing the parabolas in video games. Students investigated the standard and vertex forms in a hypothetical "Water Balloon Contest." Next week we'll try out the air rockets at QAIS.

                                                                           Welcome to AWS, Mr. Mackeigan

Mr. Mackeigan is our new Science teacher who teaches us Physics, Math and Biology.

Mr. Mackeigan is from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is an excellent teacher who graduated number one in his program at university.

He has been in China for 6 years already. He thought China was a very mysterious place when he was a kid. So he decided tobe a teacher in China and found a job here. But things didn’t go well in the first yearhe came to China. He was pretty confusedbecause of the new language and new culture. To survive in a new environment, he started learning Chinese through an app on his phone. After three years, he got used to the new environment. Things started to make sense and he could read some texts. Now he can speak some Chinese phrases that really surprise us.

Mr. Mackeigan has his parents back home and a younger brother in the United States. It’s not easy for him to be in an unfamiliar country for six years. We're glad he has stuck with his idea of being a

teacher in China, since we are honored to have such a nice teacher.
