Our Weekly Update is an opportunity for us to share all of the great learning experiences that take place both in and outside of our classroom, and is a testament to our commitment to communication with our parents as well as the community. No one is counting, but somehow everyone knows that there is only two weeks left. This is the time for students to make the final differences in their grades, think about how to improve during the summer, and -- for the Red Ties -- get organized with college preferences. 

时间飞快,还有两周本学年就要结束了。这是学生们最后提高成绩的时候,学生们也应该思考如何在暑期假期中提升自己的能力,对于红带学生来说,还要尽快准备大学申请的事宜。


As you read in last week's update, I promised to have personal conferences with students who needed to pull up their grades. These conferences are now completed. All students have the ability to earn credit for all classes if they make the extra efforts in the remaining days of school. Meanwhile, several of our students are in positions to make all As. Thanks to the teachers for providing extra encouragement.

Ms. Roth has provide all students with their Summer ELA Assignments. These two assignments will help keep the students learning during the summer. Parents, I ask that you encourage your child to keep reading in English. Students who do not continually practice their reading tend to regress and have a much more difficult time getting back to their language levels at the start of the year.

英语文学老师Ms. Roth已经为所有的学生提供了暑期的英语文学作业和阅读清单。这两项作业将有助于学生在暑期期间继续提高自己的英语学习能力。请家长们鼓励您的孩子继续用英语进行阅读。不经常进行英语阅读的学生在英语能力方面往往会退步,在下一个学年开始很难恢复到原来的英语语言水平。


This is the 11th Graders' last summer before making the transition to their selected college or universities. Their Summer should be used to identify 15 - 20 potential schools that could offer them what they need. The students should also be establishing the personal essay topics and creating multiple drafts.

同时,这也是11年级的学生升入所选择的学院或大学之前的最后一个暑假。他们在暑假期间应该确定15-20所可能满足他们兴趣和需求的学校。同时,学生们也应该开始确定个人陈述的话题内容,并着手开始写多个草案。

English Language Arts with Ms. Jia and Ms. Jenn 英语语言文学

In ELA, All students were busy this week working on their final projects for Unit 4. Using Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go as inspiration, the Blue Ties have researched some recent scientifc advancements and imagined a world where one of those advancements has gone wrong. This week, they have researched, brainstormed, planned, and drafted narrative short stories set in the worlds they created. Next week, they will revise and submit their stories. The Green Ties have completed their deep study of individual novels and are in the process of creating video presentations of their analyses. The videos will be submitted next week, at which point, the class will watch and assess them. The Red Ties have been in and out of class this week due to midnight AP exams so they've been working individually on final research projects, seeking to better understand an aspect of Elizabethan Enland and how it helped to inform Shakespeare's writing. 

本周在英语文学课上,所有的学生都在忙着完成第四单元的最后一个课题。以石黑一雄的《别让我走》为灵感,蓝带九年级的学生研究了一些最新的科学进展,设想并叙述描写一个世界,在这个世界中某一项科技出现了问题 。本周,学生们通过研究、集思广益、计划并起草了以他们创造的世界为背景的叙事短篇小说。下周,他们将修改并提交撰写的故事。绿带十年级的学生本周已经完成了对自己选择的小说的深入研究,并正在制作小说分析的视频演示。这些视频将在下周提交,届时,全班将一起观看并进行评估。本周,由于有多场AP考试在凌晨进行,所以红带十一年级的学生根据个人的时间表,单独进行期末的研究课题,选择伊丽莎白时代下英国的一个视角进行研究,并分析它是如何影响莎士比亚进行创作的。

Chinese Studies with Mr. Zhan 中国文学

This week in Chinese class, Grade 9 students read an article "Chen She's Family" in Historical Records, a famous historical work in ancient China. Students  studied and researched about two questions: one is what kind of relationship between the successful launch of the uprising and the characteristics of Chen Sheng and Wu Guang; the other is what kind of strategies and wisdom Chen Sheng and Wu Guang used to launch the uprising. On the one hand, students combed out the personality characteristics of Chen Sheng and Wu Guang; on the other hand, it is also more important for students to learn the method of reading history books: reading history in detail. Only by paying attention to the internal logic and wonderful details of historical narrative can we taste the "taste" of history. 

本周9年级学生阅读了中国古代史学名著《史记》中的一篇文章《陈涉世家》。同学们围绕着“起义的成功发动与陈胜、吴广的性格有怎样的关系”和“陈胜、吴广发动起义的策略有什么高明之处”两个问题进行阅读和探究。一方面梳理出了陈胜、吴广的性格特点,另一方面也是更重要的是,学习了阅读史书的方法:读史要细,只有关注历史叙事的内在逻辑和精彩细节,才能品出历史的“滋味”。

The Grade 10 students collected materials, made PPT, explained and shared different chapters about Chinese ancient art achievements, such as opera art, folk music, Chinese painting, ceramics and calligraphy. Through continuous explanation practice, the students' language expression is more fluent and accurate, the ability of sorting and using materials, logical thinking ability has also been significantly improved. The major contents of Chinese culture in this semester have been completed successfully. We are about to enter the final review and testing stage. Hope the students can lay a solid foundation for words and phrases, review the knowledge carefully and comprehensively, and achieve excellent results.

10年级的学生们自己搜集材料,制作课件,讲解分享了关于中国古代艺术成就中的戏曲艺术、民族音乐、中国绘画以及陶艺和书法等不同的篇章。通过不断的讲解练习,同学们的语言表达更加流畅精准,整理和运用材料的能力,逻辑思维能力也都有了显著提高。本学期的中国文化教学内容已圆满完成。我们即将进入期末复习和检测阶段,希望同学们能夯实字词基础,认真全面复习所学知识,取得优异成绩。



After the tense AP exam, the students of Grade 11 also began to enter the final review stage. The main knowledge content of this semester, including AP Chinese grammar, writing, AP reading and AP test skills, has been successfully completed according to the teaching plan. Next, we will focus on the content of the review and research, to prepare for the final test.

11年级同学们在紧张的AP考试过后,也开始进入期末复习阶段。本学期的主要知识内容,包括AP中文考试语法,写作专题,AP阅读专题以及AP考试技巧专项等,按照教学计划都已经顺利完成。接下来,我们会对所学内容进行重点复习和回顾,为期末测试做好准备。



University Guidance & TOEFL with Ms. Du大学升学指导和托福教学

In University Guidance class this week, students were asked to start thinking about their plan for the coming summer holidays. For both G10 and G11, this vacation is very important to make themselves closer to their dream schools. We talked about how to allocate time effectively for different academic and non-academic activities. They were informed that it's not wise to spend all time on one single thing, even though it may matter a lot for your final application result. For green ties, join some events related to your interested area or major to explore in depth and release potential; For red ties, top priority of the coming holidays is to complete your essays for different schools according to your self-made deadlines. All students will use this week to think carefully and create a detailed holiday plan on a weekly basis next week.

In TOEFL listening class, students entered the music history class and learned about one crucial development in European music history: the invention of the piano. Actually, TOEFL listening materials are so interesting and informative that students could get knowledge in a wide range of areas. For example, in this week's class, they learned that European composers were influenced by many factors, like the preference of patrons, the technical advances of instruments, etc. Also, they got to know both the musical and social impact of the piano in European history, especially for women. In writing class, they reviewed when and how to use attributive clause in their own work and we started a new section: subject clauses in writing.

In Grade 9 geography this week, we’re looking at the movement of refugees through multiple lenses. As geographers, we’re of course interested in the spatial patterns and demographic effects of migration, but we’re also looking at the politics, philosophy, and ethics of the recent refugee crisis. What responsibilities does the rest of the world have to these refugees? 本周在九年级地理课上,我们从多个角度观察分析了难民的流动。作为地理学家,我们当然应该对人口迁移的空间格局和人口效应感兴趣,但我们也关注最近难民危机的政治、哲学和伦理。世界其他国家对这些难民有什么责任? 


Our Grade 10/11 historians are focusing this week on post-WWII China, and the foundation of the People’s Republic of China. Then we’ll return to the Cold War to look once again at the larger geopolitical contexts and conflicts.

Congratulations, AP Geographers, for finishing a demanding college-level course in 11th grade! They all took their AP Exam early this week. They studied hard all year, we did a thorough and systematic review of all seven units (in these photos, they were sketching urban models from Unit 6), and their writing has improved throughout the year. That doesn’t mean I didn’t worry like a Mother Hen all week! I had all my fingers and toes crossed that they were well rested, in a good mindset, with a favorable distribution of questions and topics, and that the results will come back strong! 

祝贺11年级AP地理学家们完成了一门接近大学水平要求的课程!本周早些时候学生们参加了AP考试。他们整个学年都在刻苦学习,考试之前我们对7个单元都做了全面系统的复习(照片中学生们正在勾勒第6单元的城市模型),学生们的写作水平在这一年里也有了很大进步。 但在本周的考试周期间,我还是很担心学生们身心方面的调整,我祈祷学生们能得到充分的休息,保持好心态,考试时合理回答问题和话题,我相信结果肯定会很好的!

This week the students discussed the origins of the modern day Scientific method. In this regard, the students examined the impact that Galileo, Bacon, and Descartes had on the formation of Scientific knowledge and the manner in which we verify our knowledge as scientists. Furthermore, the students took the time to continue applying Newtons Laws to everyday occurrences. The students solved word problems and looked for everyday applications of these laws. Next week, the students will present their projects on Motion and show the class their designs, graphs, improvements and refinements, along with their rational for the overall process.

The Art students are finishing their artworks so that they can be displayed in the Art Gallery beginning next week during Arts Week. Students are following a system very similar to the International Baccalaureatee requirements, in which they submit .pdf slides that document an established creative process: 本周艺术课上,学生们正在努力完成他们的作品,以便下周艺术周期间开始在美术馆展出。学生遵循与IB课程要求非常相似的体系,提交.pdf幻灯片,记录既定的创作过程:

The two students destined for AP Art are working fast to create individual artworks that could be used in an illustration portfolio. Their process and works are more similar to the Advanced Placement requirements. 有意向学习AP艺术的两名学生正在努力创作个人独特的艺术作品,并可以在一个插图组合中使用。他们现在进行创作的过程跟AP课程的要求很接近。

Mathematics with Mr. Guo 数学


Grade 9 students started reviewing the topics covered in this course. We divided the content into three parts, Algebra, Geometry, and Probability and Statistics. All students completed the Algebra review assignment in class this week.

九年级的学生开始复习本学年学习的知识。我们把内容分为三个部分、代数、几何、概率统计。本周所有学生都在课堂上完成了代数复习作业。


Grade 10 students continued to graph trigonometric functions. We looked at amplitude, frequency, period, phase shift and vertical shift of sine and cosine functions, and tried to use sine and cosine function to graph tan, cot, sec and csc functions.

十年级的学生继续画三角函数图像。我们研究了正弦和余弦函数的振幅、频率、周期、相移和垂直位移,并尝试使用正弦和余弦函数来绘制tan、cot、sec和csc函数。


Most 11th graders were out of class earlier this week due to their midnight AP exam schedules. While in class, they worked on an individual assignment to review and gain a better understanding of the content covered this year.

This week is our last preparation week for our badminton tournament. We started our class with a 'Students performing' We play touch football to check out all the students performing that included: work as a team player, improved skills, How you react doing the game and communication. The students showed amazing set skills and also improved their communication, they showing respect to each other and work as a team while completing each other. We followed up with out badminton practice as the students still need to improve few basic skills, We will be competing against 9 schools this weekend and I am looking forward on how the students will perform and show respect to their opponent doing this tournament. 

本周是我们羽毛球锦标赛备战的最后一周。课程开始我们进行了“学生展示”,我们从触球开始,观看了所有学生的表现,包括:团队合作,提高技能,在比赛中的反应和交流。学生们表现出了惊人的成套技能,也提高了沟通能力,他们相互尊重,团队合作,同时互相弥补和提高。由于学生们还需要提高一些基本技能,我们随后进行了羽毛球练习,本周末我们将与9所国际学校进行比赛,我期待着学生们在比赛中跟对手的切磋和精彩表现。
