Baishan AWS is partnered with Annie Wright Schools (AWS) in Tacoma, Washington and prepares students for higher education abroad. Our Weekly Update is an opportunity for us to share all of the great learning experiences that take place both in and outside of our classroom, and is a testament to our commitment to communication with our parents as well as the community.

Welcome to the first edition of the 2021 - 2022 school year Weekly Update!
This weekly publication allows parents - and other teachers -- to know exactly what is happening both in and outside of the classrooms. We are very proud of how we design lessons that meet our specific students' needs while meeting course expectations. Our teachers seem to be naturals at making the lessons engaging and meaningful. Read below to learn how our teachers inspire students.
This publication is also a way for parents to read about what goes on outside of the classroom. At Baishan AWS, we are proud of how we create learning opportunities within the community.

English at AWS 英语
The English Department is off to a strong start this year! Ms. Iris and Mr. Xu are working together to provide TOEFL test prep to students who are getting ready to take the exam, while Ms. Mila is supporting students in their English language acquisition. In English Language Arts (ELA), Blues Ties and Red Ties are already actively engaging with texts. Yellow Ties in our newest cohort, ELA 9, are spending some time reviewing the basics of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in order to build a successful foundation. Finally, Green Ties are embracing the challenge of IBDP courses, learning about what is expected in the course and beginning to explore the first course theme: Identities. 本学年我们增强了英语教学力量！Iris贾老师和Andy徐老师共同为准备参加托福考试的学生提供托福备考指导，Mila郭老师帮助学生们提高基本的英语语言能力。在英语语言文学（ELA）领域，蓝带10年级学生和红带12年级学生已经在进行原创文本的学习。今年新入学的黄带9年级学生，在英语文学课上花了一些时间来回顾听、说、读、写的基本英语技能，为接下来的学习打好基础。最后，绿带11年级的学生正在迎接IBDP课程的挑战，学生们了解了课程的预期内容，并开始探索第一个课程主题：身份。
Chinese Literature & Culture with Ms. Emilia 中国文学
在上周初步了解了 “文化”的概念和特点以后，中国文化课的同学们探讨了“文明”与“文化”的区别和关系，通过对比和分析，得出自己的结论。我们一起研究了中国“古代文化”是如何起源的，并寻找影响文化起源和发展的因素有哪些？例如地理环境、历史纵横、社会制度等不同的方面。接下来我们会深入学习和了解“长江文化区”和“黄河文化区”这两个“中华文明”的发祥地，加深对中华民族源远流长的历史和文化的认同。After a preliminary understanding of the concept and characteristics of "culture" , the students of Chinese Culture discussed the difference and relationship between "civilization" and "culture", and reached their own conclusions through comparison and analysis. We studied how Chinese "ancient culture" originated and looked for the factors affecting the origin and development of culture? For example, different aspects such as geographical environment, history, social system and so on. Next, we will deeply study and understand the "Yangtze River cultural area" and "Yellow River cultural area", the birthplace of "Chinese civilization", and deepen our recognition of the long-standing history and culture of the Chinese nation.
11年级的同学们初步接触IB中国语言和文学课程，就感受到了它独有的魅力和挑战。学好这门课，不仅需要丰富的知识储备和扎实的语言文字基础，还需要有批派性思维，良好的语言文字运用和表达能力，以及更包容和广阔的视野和思维。不过，我相信同学们都有无穷的潜力，勇敢接受挑战，超越自我，定能获得更好的提升和成长！接下来，我们会通过研读第一部作品文本《茶馆》，学习如何分析人物，理清故事情节，感受时间和空间因素对文学作品的影响和作用。Students of Grade 11 felt its unique charm and challenge when they first knew about IB Chinese language and literature last week. To learn this course well, we not only need rich knowledge reserve and solid language foundation, but also need batch thinking, good language application and expression ability, as well as more inclusive and broad vision and thinking. However, I believe all students have infinite potential. If they bravely accept the challenge and surpass themselves, they will be able to get better promotion and growth! Next, we will study the first text Teahouse to learn how to analyze the characters, clarify the story plot, and feel the influence and role of time and space factors on literary works.
Humanities with Mr. Durbin 人文科学
This week in American History class the students learned about concepts that help people understand history, such as empathy, change, and continuity. We then started learning about history before 1492 to give them context for the creation of the U.S. In IB Social and Cultural Anthropology, the students learned about engaging in anthropology. Students began taking field notes Friday to complete an Internal Assessment.
Music with Ms. Gan 音乐
Music lessons are still online with Ms Gan. We learned about John Williams, the famous composer that composes lots of movie soundtracks from JAWS, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and more. 由于 Ms. Gan老师还在隔离期，本周音乐课在线进行。老师带学生们一起了解了著名作曲家约翰·威廉姆斯，他创作了很多电影配乐，包括《大白鲨》、《哈利·波特》、《星球大战》、《印第安纳·琼斯》等等。
There is video tutorials on Microsoft teams, and students are encourage to learn the piece and record a video for Miss Gan. Ms. Gan老师已经将视频上传到Teams中， Ms. Gan鼓励学生们学习这首曲子并录制视频发给她。
PE and Fitness with Coach López 体育健身
Fitness test: Aerobic capacity - One Mile Run 体能测试：有氧运动能力-一英里跑
This week, our High School students have been testing their health-related fitness components in a series of different activities. The standard tests followed are known as "Fitnessgram", and they provide valuable information about teenagers' fitness level. Once they complete a test, they set up S.M.A.R.T goals that will guide them to improve their scores at the end of the year, when the tests will be repeated.
Combined with the fitness tests, the students are also learning about an adaptation of Rugby, called "Touch Rugby". The grades 9 & 10 have been introduced to the basic rules and skills (passing and catching). Mr. Laki, a former semi-professional rugby player, shared his expertise with the students and demonstrated the right passing and catching form to the students. In just a couple of sessions, the students have gained a lot of confidence and have shown a great improvement. They are able to pass the ball precisely to each other while running an attack. Well done! 结合体能测试，本周学生们还学习了橄榄球的基本技能“触球”。9年级和10年级的学生已经学习了基本规则和技能（传球和接球）。Mr. Laki老师曾是半职业橄榄球运动员，他与学生们分享了自己的专业知识，并向学生们展示了正确的传球和接球形式。在短短的几节课中，学生们都已经非常自信，并取得了很大的进步，学生们已经能够在进攻时准确地将球传给队友。学生们表现不错！
Biology with Mr. Wu and Mr. Silva 生物
Students were introduced to cells. They practiced using a microscope to look at cells. They learnt how to calculate the size of cells and the magnification of a microscope from pictures of cells. They learnt why cells have to be small, the functions of life of all living things and why it is important to have multiple cells working together in our bodies. They also took a short quiz to assess their understanding. 本周生物课上，学生们学习了细胞，并实践了用显微镜观察细胞。学生们学会了如何根据细胞图片计算细胞的大小和显微镜的放大倍数。此外，学生们还了解了细胞体积小的原因，生物的生命功能，以及我们身体中多个细胞协作工作的重要性。本周我还进行了一个小测验来评估学生们的理解能力。
Integrated Sciences with Ms. Li and Mr. Silva 科学

This week our science students focused on the nuclear atoms. They researched the history of atomic theory and acted as scientists by giving presentations and making posters. They learned atomic structures, atomic mass and isotopes. They can use the nuclear symbol notation ZAX to deduce the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in atoms and ions. They studied how the mass spectrometer is used to determine the relative atomic mass of an element from its isotopic composition. 本周9/10年级的科学课聚焦在原子的探索学习。学生们像科学家一样对原子理论的历史展开了研究，制作海报，并做了演讲汇报。他们通过学习原子结构，原子质量以及同位素，能够根据原子符号推算出原子与离子里面的质子数，中子数和电子数。他们还学习了科学家如何利用质子仪测定相对原子质量。
Finally, students create their own atomic models based on what they learned!
AP-Physics 1 AP物理1
The students are learning the basics of Physics portion that is the part of AP Physics 1 syllabus. They learnt about one Dimensional Kinematics and tried to apply them in their real life. They did the related problems and real life examples. 本周在AP物理课上，学生们正在学习AP物理1教学大纲中的物理基础部分。学生学习了一维运动学，并试图将其应用到实际生活中。学生们做了相关的问题的研究，并联系了现实生活中的例子。
Math and Pre-calculus with Ms. Sunny Sun 数学和前微积分
This week, the students applied the SMART principle and set up the clear goals for studies, especially in math. We had a diagnosis test to know where the students are, to identify their strength and shortcomings we need to improve.
For Math students, we started to investigate the measurements and estimation applied in real life. With the investigation done by the students with rulers, scales,beakers grid papers…the students tried to think and find their own approach to solve the real life problems.
For Pre-calculus student, we started to enter the world of probability, to connect probability with the real world. To calculate the winning probability to help make the decisions for grabbing the chance.
本周，学生们运用了 SMART 原则，制定了明确的学习目标，尤其是在数学方面。 我们进行了小摸底练习。以了解学生的情况，找出他们的长处和需要改进地方。
Geometry and Algebra II with Mr. Kytle & Ms. Guedes 几何和代数II
The students have been engaged with diagnostic tests and assessments of their mathematical abilities. In Geometry the students are working on articulating in English mathematical equations dealing with number lines, angles, and planes. The students have a strong grasp of the mathematics and we are focusing on explanations and discussions of the mathematical problems at hand in English. In Algebra II, the students have been working with functions and determining the domain and range of graphs. The students have been enhancing their knowledge of Integral and Inequality notation.
In other news, Ms. Guedes will be making her grand entrance on Friday by way of a online conference activity. The students will get a chance to meet Ms. Guedes who has several activities planned for both the students of Geometry and Algebra II. We are all excited to get to know her better and work with her more closely now that she is here in China and working her way to Qingdao.
Ms. Guedes 老师本周五通过视频跟学生们进行了会面。Ms. Guedes老师为几何和代数II的学生计划了多项活动。我们都很高兴Ms. Guedes老师接下来将参与我们的教学活动，她现在已经到达中国，很快就会来到青岛。
