Our Weekly Update is an opportunity for us to share all of the great learning experiences that take place both in and outside of our classroom, and is a testament to our commitment to communication with our parents as well as the community.

From the Director 项目主任总结
Although 2020 is behind us, there is still a few more weeks of Semester 1. This means that students are busy summarizing what they have learned since August and preparing for their final summative assessments. These types of exams can look like traditional paper and pencil tests or they can be a bit different. For Drama students, the summative assessment comes in the form of an end-of-the-semester performance.
尽管2020年已经过去了,但距离我们第一学期结束还有几周时间。学生们现在正忙于总结自8月份以来所学的知识,并为最后的总结性评估做好准备。最后的总结性评估可能看起来像传统的纸笔考试,但又有所不同。对于本续期学习戏剧课的学生来说,他们的总结性评估是以期末汇报演出的方式进行的。
As part of Baishan AWS's emphasis on providing holistic education and facilitating experiences that students need to be accepted into universities, we added Drama class to this year's list of extra-curricular activities. Led by the experienced, professional guidance of director Romina Czaja, these students have been working on best singing, dancing, and acting techniques. These students performed Baishan AWS's first musical on Wednesday, January 14th in the Baishan Auditorium in front of their peers and guests. We appreciate the parents who braved the cold and traffic to come support their children and the arts. We are also very proud of our courageous students who demonstrate their best on stage, in a second language moreover.

Preparing for Semester 1 Reports
Students and parents are reminded that this is an important time of the year. Semester 1 reports are being finalized with grades and teacher comments. The information in these reports become part of the students' high school transcripts.

Fortunately, students still have time to make the necessary corrections and adjustments before these grades become final. Parents, we need your help with encouraging the students to take advantage of the teachers' willingness to provide individualized help during the 15-minute Get Wright Time. Teachers are providing multiple opportunities for students to make corrections or ask clarifying questions. Students must, however, identify the courses they need help in and take the initiative to get the help.

ECAs have been cancelled during this upcoming week to make sure students have the necessary time to prepare.

Humanities with Ms. Brauer 人文科学
Our Grade 9 geographers have started a new unit, and the last of our units on physical geography! They will be studying climates and ecosystems – first focusing on the natural cycles of earth, and then studying how humans have knocked some of these systems and cycles out of balance. 本周九年级的地理学家们开始学习了一个新的单元,也是我们最后一个自然地理单元!学生们将研究气候和生态系统——首先关注地球的自然循环,然后研究人类的行为是如何使这些系统和循环失去平衡的。
Our Grade 10/11 historians are studying the Ottomans, and their most famous leader Suleiman the Magnificent. Was he really magnificent? Our Grade 11 AP geographers crashed and burned on the Unit 3 test, so we’ve been assessing what went wrong, reviewing this material, and using our persistence and discipline to recover and move forward. As a summary of argumentative study, a class Mini debate contest was held this week. The positive point of view is "do a line, love a line", while the negative point of view is "love a line, do a line". By preparing for the debate, students should be clear about their own and the other side's views, and collect all kinds of arguments supporting their own views, including facts and famous sayings. This enables students to master the essentials of argumentative writing: to prove arguments with arguments. In the process of debate, students fully prove their own point of view and point out the other side's mistakes. In this way, we have basically mastered several ways of refuting the thesis: Refuting the argument, refuting the argument and refuting the argument. In the debate, students often have a fierce confrontation on one word and one argument, which also makes them realize that the argumentative paper is rigorous and proper in word use, and the use of arguments is persuasive. It is not the purpose to win or lose the debate contest. The important thing is that in this process, students not only have a vivid and specific understanding of argumentative writing, but also have a dialectical and in-depth thinking about the relationship between "personal hobbies" and "doing a good job".
Visual Arts with Mr. Brandt 视觉艺术
Following the taught creative process, the students have moved on from their technical studies of 2-point linear perspective drawing and have begun their color studies.

Students in all grades will be exploring how oil pastels can be used as both drawing and painting mediums. Oil pastels were invented as a cost-efficient way for oil painters to investigate color combinations before starting their large expensive oil painting. Similarly, our students are exploring different color combinations before starting their final artwork.

English Language Arts with Ms. Jia and Ms. Jenn 英语语言文学
This week was a writing week in all three levels of English. Ninth grade students are writing a character analysis essay, considering whether or not the character of Holden Caulfield changed over the course of the novel The Catcher in the Rye. Tenth grade students are writing persuasive essays, trying to get readers to agree that smoking in outdoor public spaces is bad and that wearing uniforms at school is a good idea...or a bad idea. Eleventh grade students are developing arguments about the harm of social media or that industrialization has been a net negative for the planet. Students in 10th and 11th grade are learning to employ pathos, ethos, and logos to support their ideas, and all students are engaged in an effort to get their citations perfect.

Physical and Health Education with Coach Faamamafa 体育
Aerobics is a form of physical exercise that combines rhythmic aerobic exercise with stretching and strength training routines with the goal of improving all elements of fitness (flexibility, muscular strength, and cardio-vascular fitness). Separated the students in groups to create any form of aerobic training. They were be able to mentioned some exercises that would help develop fitness and health. Then they perform a task in our class of doing 10 rounds of different locomotion exercises around the gym both physically and mentally. All the students completed their 10 rounds and also burns a lot of calories with smile on their faces.

Physics with Mr. Kytle 物理
As we started off this week the students examined the Earth's Gravitational Field and discovered that the strength of the field does not have a uniform distribution. The students then began the process of explaining why that might be and what might be causing this uneven distribution. On Thursday the students reviewed for their exam on the Fundamental Forces and on Friday the students were given their exam.

In this semester's Chinese reading activities, grade 10th students, under the guidance of the teacher, choose different books, such as Kafka by the sea and the story of the Sahara, and read them by plans. This week, Billy and Max explained and displayed their selected Festival topics respectively, and shared their research results on different festival customs and cultures through their videos or ppts. In addition, we continue to carry out the special exercises of reading special topics - expository reading and argumentative reading, in order to improve the ability of reading analysis and the ability to solve problems.
Chemistry with Ms. Jiajia 化学课
In this week, students started with chemical reactions. Students are supposed to: formulate a hypothesis or predict the results of an experiment; determine a balanced chemical equation for a given chemical phenomena; represent chemical substances or phenomena with appropriate diagrams or models (e.g., electron configuration); explain the relationship between variables within an equation when one variable changes;write down overall ionic equations and net ionic equations; differ strong electrolytes, weak electrolytes and non electrolytes.
这个星期,学生们开始了化学反应的学习。学生应该会对一个实验给出假设或预测实验结果;能够平衡化学方程式;能够用合适的图表或模型来描述化学物质或化学现象;能够解释各物理量间的相互关系,能够写出完整及简化的离子反应式。
University Guidance and TOEFL with Ms. Du 美国大学升学指导课
本周课上首先进行了PSAT文学类阅读文章的阅读策略复习以及重点描述情节分析,然后进行了社科类说明文的文章结构分析。在文学类文章讲解中,对于一些生动的情节采取了场景类比的方式,让学生们能感同身受,然后对于问题做出自己正确的判断。通过讲解,学生们了解到在PSAT和SAT考试中,词汇量以及语法知识只是前提,不意味着就可以取得好的成绩。SAT是一个注重思维方式以及理解能力的测试,这些能力绝不是可以短期培养的,需要长期的循序渐进。建议孩子们课下加大英文阅读量,形成阅读和思考习惯,真正提升英语综合能力。
In this week's class, we first reviewed the reading strategies of PSAT literature reading article and analyzed the key descriptive plots, and then analyzed the structure of social science expository article. In the explanation of literature article, scene analogy was adopted for some vivid plots, so that the students could feel the same, and then made their own correct answers to questions. Through the explanation, the students understand that in PSAT and SAT, vocabulary and grammar knowledge is only a prerequisite, the grasp of them does not mean you can get good grades. SAT is a test that focuses on the way of thinking and the ability of comprehension, which cannot be cultivated in a short time. It is suggested that students should increase the amount of English reading after class, form the habit of reading and thinking, and then really improve their English proficiency.
