Baishan AWS is partnered with Annie Wright Schools (AWS) in Tacoma, Washington and prepares students for higher education abroad. Our Weekly Update is an opportunity for us to share all of the great learning experiences that take place both in and outside of our classroom, and is a testament to our commitment to communication with our parents as well as the community. October 8 - Guest Speaker 10月8号 特邀演讲嘉宾
Baishan AWS will host a CFA as a guest speaker from HSBC bank who will teach the students about the value of money and financial responsibility. This will be the first part of a series. Students will complete an online course module.

Tuesday, October 12 - Fall Language Assessments 10月12日 星期二——秋季学期语言评估
All students will have their Fall Oxford Language Assessments. Data from these assessments help to show how much growth the students are making regarding English listening and reading.

Baishan AWS will be joining Amerasia for activities, adventure, and family fun on Saturday, October 16th. All students are expected to attend. All families are encouraged to attend. Students and faculty should wear their House t-shirts. Family members assume the same house and color of their son or daughter, meaning if the Baishan AWS student is a House Fushan and has white t-shirt, then the family member is invited to wear a white shirt.

English at AWS 英语
AWS students got some practice with question formation this week during EAL classes. In addition, Yellow Ties continued to focus on intensive English language acquisition; they are improving quickly. The Blue Ties spent the week considering symbols and narrative perspective in the novel Darius the Great is Not Okay. Green Ties dug into Goth subculture and consideration of the question, "What does it mean to be normal?" Finally, our Red Tie Max was introduced to literary criticism through a variety of lenses and spent time discussing and deciding which lenses best apply to the novel The Wasted Vigil.

Chinese Literature & Culture with Ms. Emilia 中国文学

In this week's Chinese culture class, we learned the surname culture that marks blood relationship, and understood the origin and significance of surnames. The students explored and shared the development history and interesting stories of their surnames. So far, the content of the first unit of cultural origin exploration has been finished. I hope students can review it well and make sufficient preparations for the unit test.
中国文学课上,我们继续学习《茶馆》,同学们分组研究了作家老舍的作品、写作风格,《茶馆》的历史背景,主要人物形象的分析以及作品的深刻主题和内涵。在学生们初步研究的基础上,补充更深入广泛的知识,与读者和当今社会建立联系,产生交互性和批判性的学习和思考。
In the DP Chinese literature class, we continued to study Teahouse. The students studied the works and writing style of the writer Lao She, the historical background of Teahouse, the analysis of the main characters and the profound theme and connotation of the works in groups. On the basis of students' preliminary research, I supplement more in-depth and extensive knowledge, establish contact with readers and today's society, and produce interactive and critical learning and thinking.
Humanities with Mr. Durbin 人文科学
This week in American History class, we learned about the colonization of the Americas by European nations. Students collaborated to do presentations about each of the four major nations that colonized the Americas. The students presented the motivations, areas, conflicts, and results of European colonization in the Americas. 本周在美国历史课上,我们学习了欧洲国家对美洲的殖民统治。学生们合作进行了关于四个主要国家对美洲进行殖民统治的演讲。学生们在演讲中介绍了欧洲在美洲殖民统治的动机、区域、冲突和结果。
In IB Social and Cultural Anthropology students started the week off with presentations about the key concepts of anthropology. They will use those concepts during inquiries about real world issues as we progress through the course and at the end during their external assessments. We did a music ensemble today. Max Sun on drums, Jesicca on violin, and Katherine on the piano. We learn Bon Jovi's song, living on a prayer. Biology with Mr. Wu and Mr. Silva 生物
This week, Grade 11 students were engaged in their Cell biology unit with details on how cells membranes structures regulates the transport of materials entering and existing the cell. They practiced drawing and labelling cell membranes and linked structure to function, which is an important principle in science. They also learnt the differences between plant and animal cells, and practiced drawing simple prokaryotic cells and more complex eukaryotic cells.

PE and Fitness with Coach López 体育健身
This week, Grade 9 & 10 students were involved in their first Peer Assessment of this school year. It assessed the students' understanding of Touch Rugby, knowing of its rules, their basic catching & and passing skills and the ability to perform them in game-time situations. There has been a clear improvement in term of applying offensive and defensive strategies, and it's partly thanks to the video sessions that take place at the beginning of the lessons. Regarding Grades 11 & 12, students keep designing their own workouts, focusing on a specific goal that they have set for themselves. Some of them are working on their cardiovascular endurance, while others are trying to gain and tone their muscles. This week, Grade 9 & 10 students learnt about the specific groups and periods present in Modern Periodic Table. Students had to identify connections between elements in a group have in similar chemical properties as they have the same number of outermost shell electrons. Math and Pre-calculus with Ms. Sunny Sun 数学和前微积分
For Grade 11 students, with the introduction of the percentage error, it helps the students more in life to understand the degree of accuracy. The practice on scientific notation and Pythagoras theorem laid a more solid foundation to explore further in the trigonometric world. 本周在数学课上,11年级的学生学习了百分比误差,有助于学生们在生活中更多地了解准确度。科学记数法和毕达哥拉斯定理的学习为学生们进一步探索三角函数奠定了坚实的基础。
For Pre-calculus student, Priscilla first time heard the Goedel‘s incompleteness theorems. These theorems paved the way for new ideas in the field of logic and the foundations of mathematics and also sets her thinking. This week the Geometry students continued exploring the tools they will be using throughout the year. They worked with different ways to find lengths of segments and measures of angles, sometimes by making and solving linear equations. 本周在几何课上,学生们探索了本学年要用到的数学技能,用不同的方法测量和计算线段的长度和角的度数,有时会通过建立和解答线性方程组来求解。
In Algebra 2 the students continued a comprehensive review of the skills from previous years that will help them be successful in this year class.
