Baishan AWS is partnered with Annie Wright Schools (AWS) in Tacoma, Washington and prepares students for higher education abroad.  Our Weekly Update is an opportunity for us to share all of the great learning experiences that take place both in and outside of our classroom, and is a testament to our commitment to communication with our parents as well as the community.

I had conversations with parents and students via Zoom during the Summer to discuss the upcoming courses and goals for Baishan AWS. Now that we are one quarter through this academic year, our Associate Head in Tacoma Ms. Susan Bauska and I wanted to revisit with our parents to get their perspectives on how their child is doing in school. I am happy to report good news.

暑假期间，我通过Zoom视频会议与家长和学生进行了交谈，讨论了白珊·安妮高中即将推出的课程和目标。现在我们已经进行了本学年的四分之一，本周开始塔科马安妮怀特学校的副校长苏珊·鲍斯卡女士和我再次跟家长进行了视频会议，了解家长们对孩子在学校的表现和意见。我很高兴收到一些积极的反馈。

This was the first week of the Tuesday/Thursday meeting and, while we have not spoken to all parents, ALL seemed pleased. The most common report is that their child happy, but concerned that the courses are challenging. This alone is encouraging and what we hope to achieve. However, we understand that students will need support. This is why we have added the extra study time into the daily schedules and why I am encouraging students to go back to teachers with questions.  I am quite convinced that our dedicated teachers are available in-person and through Teams to respond to the students' needs. 本周是我们与家长进行一对一沟通的第一周，虽然我们还没有与所有的家长进行交谈，但家长对孩子在学校的表现看起来很满意。最多的反馈是孩子们非常喜欢在学校的学习和生活， 但同时也担心课程具有挑战性。这个反馈很积极，也是我们希望实现的。我们深知学生需要各方面的支持，为此我们在常规的课程外增加了额外的学习时间，同时鼓励学生们积极向老师提问。我深信，我们敬业的老师可以当面或通过Teams来帮助学生，为学生答疑解惑。

I look forward to continuing the conversations parents next week as well.

我也期待着下周继续与家长们进行一对一的沟通。

Dress up Day and Halloween Fun 装扮日和万圣节

Special thanks to the Baishan Middle School IMYC students for joining us this afternoon for fun and games to celebrate this spirited holiday. The faculty and the older students helped create games and events for the groups of students to enjoy.

非常感谢白珊中学IMYC的学生们今天下午加入我们的行列，一起玩游戏，庆祝这个充满活力的节日。特别感谢老师们和高年级的学生们帮助组织游戏和进行活动。

Students also had a chance to win a jar filled with candy by guessing the correct amount.  学生们也有机会通过猜对罐子里正确的糖果数量，赢得里面所有的糖果。

Binghamton University Visit - November 1   11月1日  美国Binghamton大学申请讲座

Representatives from Binghamton University will visit our 11th graders, and possibly students from Amerasia, to introduce the school and application process. Binghamton is the number one-ranked public university in New York state.

Binghamton大学的代表将为我们11年级的学生进行大学申请指导，美亚国际学校的部分学生也会参加讲座，大学代表将会向学生介绍学校和大学申请的过程。Binghamton 大学是纽约州排名第一的公立大学。

AP Exam registration - November  15 deadline  AP考试注册  11月15日截止

AP students will need to log in to Prometrics to register and pay for AP Exam. Mainland China uses a different system than College Board. AP学生需要登录Prometrics网站注册并支付AP考试费用。中国大陆采用与大学理事会不同的制度。

HSBC Bank visit - November 13, Saturday  11月13日 周六 汇丰银行实地研学

Baishan AWS students have a chance to get a behind-the-scene look at how banks operate. This is the second part of the Speaker series dedicated to finance.

Open Day - November 20, Saturday 11月20日 周六 学校开放日

Baishan AWS will be hosting an Open House for prospective families in the larger community. Consider sharing this opportunity with friends who may be interested in learning more about Baishan AWS. Mr. Silva and Ms. Jenn will provide demonstration lessons for both students and parents.

IB Mathematics AI SL with Ms. Guedes   IB数学

This week the students in IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretations worked on Trigonometry in 3 dimensions. They looked at past exam questions and brought them to "life". They realized how necessary trigonometric ratios and formulas are when they need to make an exact model of the shape we discuss. Afterwards, they used the models to see where each angle is located, in which triangle they participate, and what is a reasonable way to calculate it. Also, they discussed whether the models are give an exact information, or analyzed possible measurement errors and the reasons for them.  本周IB数学上，学生们应用和阐述了三维三角学。学生们了解了过去的试题，并把知识应用到生活中。当学生们需要对我们讨论的形状建立一个精确的模型时，他们意识到三角比和公式是多么必要。之后，他们使用模型来查看每个角度的位置，使用什么样的三角形，以及计算它的合理方法。此外，我们还讨论了模型是否给出了准确的信息，分析了可能的测量误差及其原因。 

Geometry and Algebra II with Ms. Guedes    几何和代数II

The Geometry students worked with angles formed by parallel lines and their transverse. Some of the concepts were familiar to them from previous years, and they focused on learning the vocabulary. 本周在几何课上，学生们学习了平行线及其横截面形成的角度。学生们之前学过这方面的概念和知识，课上我们专注学习了相关数学词汇的英文表达。 

Algebra II students continued their exploration of linear functions. They worked on function presentations in slope-intercept form, point-slope form, and standard form. In their last class they used graphing tools to explore absolute value functions. 本周代数II课上，我们继续学习了线性函数。学生们以斜率截距形式、点斜率形式和标准形式进行了函数演示。在上节课中，学生们使用了绘图工具来学习绝对值函数。 

Biology with Mr. Silva 生物

This week IBDP Biology students learned  about Cell Division and formation of primary and secondary tumours, we looked at medicinal technology treatment against cancer. This subtopic in Cell Biology close the unit and now we are moving on to our next unit in Molecular Biology. 本周在IBDP生物课上， 学生学习了原发性和继发性肿瘤的细胞分裂和形成，我们学习了治疗癌症的医学技术。本周我们结束了细胞生物学这一子主题单元的学习，下周我们将进入分子生物学单元的学习。

Integrated Sciences with Mr. Silva 科学

This week 9&10 Integrated Science class closed their first unit in this the year. Students wrote summative exams about Atoms, Periodic Table and The Scientific Method. Now we are moving on to more complex explorations on Chemical Reactions and super excited to use our prior knowledge in hand on activity.   本周在综合科学课上，我们结束了第一单元的学习。学生们进行了关于原子、元素周期表和科学方法的总结性考试。现在，我们正在探索学习更为复杂的化学反应，学生们非常兴奋地将我们现有的知识用于化学实验活动。

Circular Motion圆周运动 

Based on the last week lectures on Circular motion, the challenging problems were discussed in the class. Students were given opportunity to put up their doubts and some problems were solved for them. 基于上周圆周运动的学习，本周我们在课堂上讨论了一些具有挑战性的问题。学生们提出了一些疑问，并解决了一些问题。

The motion in well of death and banking of roads were brought in to reconsideration again for the students to know about their significance in daily life. 本周我们再次讨论了死亡之井的特技运动和道路倾斜的话题，以便让学生们了解其在日常生活中的意义。  Overall, this week was like a revision week for students. The students were given more and more encouragement for getting strength in the subject. 总的来说，本周是一个复习周。学生们对这门学科越来越有信心。 

Individuals and Societies with Mr. Durbin 人文科学

This week in American History class the students finished their Enlightenment figure presentations.  We read excerpts from Thomas Paine's Common Sense and started a unit on the lead up to the American Revolution.  Next week we will talk about the colonial response to Britain taxing them without representation and get ready for a class role-play debate- Loyalists vs. Revolutionaries.

In Social and Cultural Anthropology we learned about Areas of Inquiry and did a unit on Health and Well Being, an investigation into the impact of air pollution on human health.  The students did various inquiries on the subject while doing a documentation project to be a part of an essay.  The students are going to do an inquiry into Evolutionism as related to the Area Of Inquiry, The Body.

本周在社会和文化人类学课上，我们了解了探究的领域，并开始学习健康和幸福这一单元，调查空气污染对人类健康的影响。学生们对这个主题进行了各种提问，并进行记录，作为文章写作的一部分。学生们将对进化论进行探究，这与探究领域的身体相关。

English at AWS 英语

In the spirit of Halloween, we read some scary stories this week, just for fun, to get in the mood for the end-of-week Halloween party, incuding planning and preparing a fabulous Haunted House! In class, students were focused on writing end-of unit essays in 10th and 12th grades, the IBDP English B Green Ties got some practice with reading comprehension and listening texts, and the 9th graders crossed the threshhold to continue their hero's journey. 伴随着万圣节的到来，本周我们阅读了一些恐怖故事， 为学生们参加周末的万圣节派对营造了气氛，包括计划和准备一个令人印象深刻的鬼屋！在文学课上，10年级和12年级的学生正在集中精力进行单元文章的写作，在IBDP英语B课上，绿带11年级的学生在阅读理解和听力文本方面进行了一些练习，9年级的学生继续学习英雄之旅的文学主题。

PE and Fitness with Coach López 体育健身

Grade 9 & 10 have started their basketball unit. The main focus of the first couple of lesson has been passing, dribbling, and shooting. The students will record themselves in slow motion to analyze their shooting form and compare it with the correct shooting form. By doing this, they will be able to improve their own shots, taking advantage of the use of technology, which is very present in sports nowadays.  本周体育课上，九年级和十年级的学生开始了篮球训练。前两节课的重点是传球、运球和投篮。学生们将记录自己的慢动作，分析自己的投球方式，并将其与正确的投球方式进行比较。通过这样做，学生们可以改进自己的投篮，这是现在体育运动中非常普遍的技术。

Grade 11 & 12 continue developing their overall fitness in the weight room twice a week.  They are very familiar with all the equipment and feel confident trying out different types of lifts thanks to the supervision and guidance provided.  11年级和12年级的学生继续每周两次的健身锻炼，他们对所有的设施都已经非常熟悉，在老师的监督和指导下，他们有信心尝试不同类型的器械。 

Chinese Literature & Culture with Ms. Emilia  中国文学

       在深入学习理解儒家思想观点，及其对个体和社会的影响基础上，本周我们开展了一堂精彩的辩论课。学生们学以致用，引经据典，呈现了一场关于人的本性是“性本善”还是“性本恶”的激烈辩论。学生们把所学的中国古代文化思想加以运用，结合典型事例和各自的生活经验，对人性进行了深入的讨论和探究，在如何“为人处世”方面也颇受启发。同学们也学到了如何更好地运用语言工具和如何提高辩论技巧，比如做足充分准备，合理把控时间，引用事例精准恰当等。On the basis of in-depth study and understanding of Confucian ideas and their impact on individuals and society, we held a wonderful debate class this week. The students applied what they had learned and copiously quoted authoritative works, presenting a heated debate on whether human nature is "inherently good" or "inherently evil". The students applied the learned ancient Chinese culture and thought, combined with typical examples and their own life experience, deeply discussed and explored human nature, and were also inspired in how to "behave". The students also learned how to make better use of language tools and how to improve debate skills, such as making full preparations, reasonably controlling time, quoting accurate and appropriate examples, etc.
