Baishan AWS is partnered with Annie Wright Schools (AWS) in Tacoma, Washington and prepares students for higher education abroad. Our Weekly Update is an opportunity for us to share all of the great learning experiences that take place both in and outside of our classroom, and is a testament to our commitment to communication with our parents as well as the community.

From the Director 项目主任总结
This proved to be a busy week for many who were finishing unit assessments and making corrections to big assignments. In many classes, students needed to demonstrate many of the lessons learned over several weeks by completing larger, more summative tests.
本周对学生和老师来说,都是非常忙碌的一周。本周许多课程都完成了单元评估和作业修改提交。学生们需要通过完成更多、更具总结性的测试来展示他们这几个星期学到的知识。
We are at the point of the year when students are becoming more comfortable with their classes and teachers, and begin to relax a bit too much. I am encouraging parents to help us keep the pressure on the students. I am asking the parents to continue to challenge their child to explain the notes and assignments in their planners when they are signed over the weekends. Ask them to explain the teacher codes and see if there is missing information. And, as always, please leave a note in the planner if you have any concerns, or communicate with the advisors.

The students should also be encouraged to explain which teachers they are going to during our Get Wright Time at 16:05 each afternoon -- a time when students learn to reflect on their own progress and make responsible decisions with their time. Teachers are more than happy to help them with a last-minute question or explanation of a difficult concept.

Epidemiology Lab "Pandemic" 流行病学实验室“大流行”
Our Red Tie 11th graders were fortunate to have an opportunity to take part in a science experiment organized by Mr. Mark Brierley from Qingdao Amerasia International School and supervised by Ms. Emilia Zheng. These students joined many QAIS students and faculty, along with Ms. Claire Wen from Baishan School to become part of an epidemiology lab that mimiced how diseases spread with simple liquid in test tubes. 本周我们11年级红领带学生在郑老师的带领下,有幸参加了青岛美亚国际学校马克·布莱利先生组织的科学实验。学生们加入到美亚国际学校的老师和学生们中去,成为流行病学实验室的一员,该实验室模拟了用试管中的简单液体传播疾病的过程。
The students were challenged to deduce who "patient zero" was by determining who shared water with each other. As it happens, our very own Baishan AWS student Red Tie Tony was the unlucky "patient zero" in this experiment. 学生们通过确定谁和别人共用水来推断谁是“零号病人”。碰巧,我们白珊·安妮高中的红领带学生Tony成为这个实验中不幸的“零号病人”。

Mathematics with Mr. Guo 数学
This week, Grade 9 students continued exploring how to draw a parabola, the graph of a quadratic function. They learned parabolas in vertex form and standard form. Grade 10 students are getting ready to learn Radical Functions. We reviewed properties of Exponents and major operations with Radical expressions. Grade 11 students used eight basic identities to express other trigonometric identities, including sine, cosine and tangent of the sum and difference of two angles.

English Language Arts with Ms. Jia and Ms. Jenn 英语语言文学
Our final week of Unit 1 was spent correcting mistakes and finishing missing assignments before we close the unit and move on. We also took time for library visits because it's always good to have a book to read for pleasure in quiet moments.

Next week, we will begin our second units of study in all three grade levels. Year 9 will take on themes about coming of age and the classic anti-hero. Year 10 will focus on how young people are making a difference in the world. Year 11 will practice their skills at making arguments, using AP Human Geography topics of cultural and language diffusion for our main reading texts. Students should all feel proud that they completed novel-length texts and quality pieces of writing in Unit 1!

Physical and Health Education with Coach Faamamafa 体育
This week we use small objects and tennis balls to let the students work on their catching and fast moving. Let the students work in pairs to figure out the easy way to make the catch happen on time and make sure they don't drop before they arrive there.

Tennis ball- Each pair have one ball and the rules of the game is to let the student allow the ball to bounce only one time before they catch it. Two groups separate in the same space between them and make the catch after one bounce- student be able to run to the ball and develop their fast reaction to the situation in short amount of time.

Plunger- This game use a small ball this is the plunger five students on the defense side and the rest on the offense side. The students in the offense try to get the plunger near the defense without getting tag by them. This game including a lot of communication in each team on how to work together to get the plunger away from the defense.

This week the students finalized their understanding of atoms and atomic bonds. On Thursday the students reviewed for their exam on this unit and as the week came to a close the students did a mock exam. At the students request, I have given them this weekend to review for their exam and we will have our exam in class next Monday. Chemistry with Ms. Jiajia 化学
In this week, Grade 11 students learned how an element forms to an ion by losing or gaining electrons. They could distinguish the difference between a cation and an anion and deduce ionic compounds using metal and nonmetal elements. Students talked about both physical and chemical properties within a group and across a period. Metal elements on the left of the period (for example sodium and magnesium) form basic oxides. On the right-hand side of the period, the oxides of non-metals are acidic. The point of change in the period occurs around group 13 (for example, aluminum), which can act amphoteric ally.

Humanities with Ms. Brauer 人文科学
Grade 9 had their first unit test in physical geography, and we’re shifting our studies now from plate tectonics and the rock cycle to water resources and Earth’s water cycle.

Our Historians are exploring the enduring contributions of the Zhou dynasty this week, and making presentations on Taoism, Confucianism, and Legalism.

The AP Geographers finished their second unit exam this week, and now we’re shifting our focus from demographics to global economic development.

Chinese Language with Ms. Zheng 中国文学

Legalism is an important school in Chinese history who advocate the rule of law as the core ideology. It takes the responsibility of enriching the country and strengthening the army, and become the main ruling means of centralization. This week, G10 learned the legalist school's thought and viewpoint, the representative figure Han Feizi and his article FIve Bookworms, with a deep understanding and discussion on the ancient Chinese history, culture, philosophy, social system, etc.
11年级学生在研究学习汉语语法的道路上继续前行。本周开始学习现代汉语短语的类型及分类方法。通过对不同结构类型短语的分析,更好地理解词汇的性质和意义,也为接下来学习“句子”做了充分的准备。善于思考的学生们还提出了一些有趣的问题,例如“吃饭”“写字”“睡觉”“堵车”“遇难”,哪些是短语?哪些是句子?依据又是什么呢?
Grade 11 students are on the way to study Chinese grammar. This week, we began to learn the types and classification of modern Chinese phrases. Through the analysis of different structural types of phrases, we can better understand the nature and meaning of vocabulary, and make full preparation for the next learning of "sentence". The thoughtful students also put forward some interesting questions, such as "Chifan", "Xiezi", "Shuijiao", "Duche" and "Yunan". Which are the phrases? Which are sentences? What is the basis?

The Blue Tie 9th grade students have completed their charcoal drawings.

The Green and Red Tie 10th and 11th graders have now submitted two research assignments related to Precisionism and are getting closer to beginning their summative unit artwork. They should now have submitted slides in .PDF format that demonstrates their research on the art genre, their intentions, and their compositional studies.

This week's topic was about selecting colors that reinforce their intended expressions. To do this, the students completed a Goethe Triangle, which is named for the famous philosopher, scientist, and color researcher.

Chinese Studies with Mr. Zhan 中国文学
本周9年级学生学习了《儒林外史》中的精彩片段“范进中举”。学生们通过查资料,对科举制的产生、发展至僵化有进一步的了解,分享了对科举制度的看法。通过研读,体会到“讽刺”手法的魅力和力度。在学以致用的实战环节,学生可运用“讽刺”手法写一则故事,亦可从科举考试谈到当今学生如何对待考试。在点评环节,学生充分互动,思维活跃,频出“金句”。在充分听取同学和老师的建议的基础上,每个人再进行修改升格,以完成“以读促写”的训练。
This week, G9 students learned the wonderful episode of "Fan Jin Zhongju" from the Scholars. The students had a better understanding of the emergence and development of the imperial examination system and shared their views on the system. Through the study, we can realize the charm and strength of satire. In the practical link, students can use "Satire" to write a story, or talk about how students treat the examination from the imperial examination. In the review section, students fully interact with each other, thinking actively, and frequent "golden sentences". Based on fully listening to the suggestions of the students and teachers, everyone revised and upgraded to complete the training of "promoting writing by reading".
University Guidance with Ms. Du 美国大学升学指导课
This week, we switched the topic from How to Choose Major to How to Choose a college/university. Firstly, I introduced several college ranking systems and analyzed their authority. When they were asked to mention one thing, they'd like to find out more about College/University, their answers were various and interesting, including dorms, gyms, part-time opportunities, tuitions, etc. At that point, I handed out the College Match Terms worksheet, in which M stands for Major, A means Academics, T is for Territory, C represents Cost, and H stands for Help. Among the specific terms provided, students could find most of the items that they cared about college and then added more that were not on the list. When students' interest was aroused, I "invited" them to have a visual campus tour on the Internet. They visited the Book Store, Student Service Center, the Athletic Center, etc. It was a wonderful experience. And after that, many already couldn't wait to visit real American universities!
