Baishan AWS is partnered with Annie Wright Schools (AWS) in Tacoma, Washington and prepares students for higher education abroad. Our Weekly Update is an opportunity for us to share all the great learning experiences that take place both in and outside of our classroom, and is a testament to our commitment to communication with our parents as well as the community.

This week's Update is a testament to the quality of educators that we have here at Baishan AWS. As you read through this edition, you read about rigorous lessons in all grade-levels. Most notably, however, is that the lessons that our students are given are meaningful in that they relate to current events and to real, current world your children are growing up in.

Mathematics with Mr. Guo 数学
Grade 9 students did their second test on solving quadratic equations, most students did well and improved their grades compared to the first time. They practiced graphing parabolas in standard, vertex and intercept form and tried to write a quadratic function for a given parabola.
这周我们第二次测试了解一元二次方程,大部分九年级同学的成绩和第一次相比都有了提高。他们继续练习画标准式,顶点式,交点式的抛物线,并尝试着通过抛物线写函数表达式。
Grade 10 students learned to solve square root and other radical equations. Then we discussed the domain and range of some radical functions, and graphed square root and cubic root functions.

Grade 11 students continued to battle with trigonometric identities. We derived tan(A+B), tan(A-B) formulas and all half-angle formulas using the identities they learned last week. We came up with different strategies to memorize these formulas.
十一年级同学继续学习三角函数,我们推导出正切两角和、两角差公式,正弦、余弦、正切的半角公式,同学们尝试着理解和记住这些公式。
English Language Arts with Ms. Jia and Ms. Jenn 英语语言文学
ELA classes are jumping into new units this week. In 9th grade, students did a little background research on JD Salinger and The Catcher in the Rye. This novel is going to be a challenge for students but it's one they can meet! The 10th grade is going to be focusing on how young people are making changes in the world and what a little kindness can do for the human spirit! Our main text is the novel Pay It Forward, about a young boy with a good idea. In 11th grade, students will be reading a variety of nonfiction texts about the language and culture. They'll be exploring their own opinions about the power of words, how culture is defined, and how it changes, with the ultimate objective of writing a good argument! We are starting the unit off with a little poetry from the 2014 poetry slam competition in the USA. Here, the poets perform "Unforgettable."

Physical and Health Education with Coach Faamamafa 体育
This week we did our triangle games volleyball basketball and badminton. To let them work together in volleyball to complete 6 passes in a row without dropping the ball and then try to serve in the basketball rim. This activity is important to let the students developed their passing game, decision making in a short period of time and communicate with each other to find a way and sort out their teams in the correct order and try to make sure the ball will go inside the rim. There were other volleyball skills practice included as well.
本周体育课上,学生们混合练习了三项球类运动:排球、篮球和羽毛球。学生们需要团队合作,在排球练习中一起完成连续6次传球而不掉球,然后尝试在篮筐内投球。这项活动能提高学生的传球技能,短时间内做出决定的反应能力,团队间互相沟通找到解决问题的方法,以及如果正确地安排团队成员的位置并努力确保球会进入篮筐。除此之外我们还练习了一些其他的排球技能。
We also managed to get few AWS students to join my volleyball team this week and I’m looking forward for more students to come join the team with the QAIS students, I think it’s a great opportunity for students to get to know each other and play as a team together. Badminton and basketball, I am also looking forward to recruiting students to join the basketball team and start a badminton club.

Physics with Mr. Kytle 物理
On Monday of this week, the students completed their exam on Scope and Scale. The students also began to work on their project for Scope and Scale dealing with a particular Element from the Periodic Table of Elements. Also, starting on Thursday, we began our new Unit on Forces and Matter. The students began to examine the four fundamental forces found in the Universe. Those forces are Gravity, Electromagnetism, Strong Force, and Weak Force. There are a lot of new terms for the students to comprehend and consider but I feel as though we have turned a corner in Physics and during the rest of the school year, we will make a lot of progress.
本周在物理课上,周一学生们完成了比例和尺度这一单元的考试。学生们也开始准备他们的课题,研究元素周期表中的特定元素。本周四我们开始学习力和物质这一单元,学生们研究了宇宙中发现的四种基本力:重力、电磁力、强力和弱力。尽管学生们需要理解和学习很多新的术语,但我觉得他们在物理学习上已经有了一个转折点,在本学年剩下的时间里,他们将会取得更大的进步。
Chemistry with Ms. Jiajia 化学
This week Grade 11 students worked on periodic summary. They could illustrate trends of ionization energy, affinity, electronegativity, physical and chemical properties both across a period and down a group. Meanwhile they can deduce the exclusions that don't follow the trends by using electro configuration and orbital diagram. Then students started to study ionic bond and ionic compounds. They knew how atoms form ionic bonds through chemical bonding activity.

Next week students will learn covalent bonding, covalent compounds, Lewis structure and molecular shape.

In all three grade levels and Advisory, we’ve been taking some time to study how the election process works in the United States, and examine why this election has been particularly interesting.

Our APHG geographers have dipped into a bit of history this week, studying the origins of the UN, IMF, and World Bank to understand both the political and economic contexts that spurred their creation, and how they affect our international monetary system now.

Chinese Language with Ms. Zheng 中国文学

This week, the grade 10th students studied another school of academic thought, the core idea of Mohism, the main representative figure Mozi and his masterpiece Universal love. After a few weeks of study, they had a good grasp of the content of ancient academic thought and thinkers, and shared their feelings and experiences in the form of group discussion and explanation. At the same time, each group also made their own academic school posters, which drew a perfect end to the ideological and cultural theme of unit 2.
句子是现代汉语言体系的最高层级。在掌握了十大短语类型的基础上,本周11年级开始学习汉语句子的成分——主语、谓语、宾语等。学习划分句子的成分,表情达意的同时能清晰知道句子内部的关系,让我们“知其然,亦知其所以然”。同时,11年级学生们开始搜集材料和证据为本学期的中西方节日专题做准备。
Sentence is the highest level of Chinese language system. Based on mastering the ten types of phrases, grade 11 students began to learn the components of Chinese sentences -- subject, predicate, object, etc. Learning to divide the components of a sentence, we can clearly know the relationship within the sentence while expressing the meaning, so that we can "know what it is and why it is". Another, the students began to collect materials and evidence to prepare for the Chinese and western festival project.
Visual Arts with Mr. Brandt 视觉艺术
All Visual Art students are investigating the creative process. This process includes identifying an intention, exploring prior artists, then studying colors. Last week the Blue Ties, Green Ties, and Red Ties studied the famous colorist and philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and his research strategies. This week all the students are applying their understanding of color relationships to the subject matter and ideas of their choosing. The 10th and 11th grade Painting students are using acrylic, while the Drawing students will concentrate more on using watercolor to accent their drawings.

Next week, the students will begin applying all that they have learned to their chosen subject matter and begin a final unit artwork. They will be given 3 weeks to work on this one important summative project. 下周,学生们需要将他们所学的知识应用到所选择的创作主题上,并开始创作本单元的作品。学生们将有3周时间来完成这项重要的总结性作品。
Chinese Studies with Mr. Zhan 中国文学

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a well-known classical vernacular novel in China, in which "Three Visits to the Hut" is a wonderful segment. This week, the 9th students learned this clip. They studied and explored the key words of "layer by layer analysis" in plot and "artistic contrast" in character description, and shared the learning results. Through the study, the students have a deep understanding of the writing skills of the plot promotion mode and the characterization of Chinese classical vernacular novels.
University Guidance with Ms. Du 美国大学升学指导课
This week, students took class in QAIS library. They all successfully created their own Scoir account. Scoir is a very useful tool to assist students with college application. With the help of this website, students can research colleges, have visual campus tours, compare different colleges, and input personal information, etc. After creating the account, each student was required to do a self-reflection and finished the first version of their own personal bio. Since there is a limit of number of words, everyone needed to think carefully before writing and chose the words that could best describe themselves. In this process, they had a good opportunity to figure out who am I, a question that I asked at the beginning of this semester and required them to keep searching for the answer.
本周,学生们在美亚学校图书馆上课。他们都成功地创建了自己的Scoir账户。Scoir是一个非常有用的工具来帮助学生申请大学。在这个网站的帮助下,学生可以研究大学,进行可视化的校园参观,比较不同的大学和输入个人信息等。创建账户后,每个学生都要进行自我思考,完成自己个人简历的初级版本。因为字数是有限制的,所以每个人在写作前都要仔细考虑,选择最能描述特点自己的词。在这个过程中,他们有了一个很好的机会来认清楚“我是谁”,这是我在本学期初提出的一个问题,要求他们不断寻找答案。
