From the Director  项目主任总结

The beautiful snow experienced during the Christmas holiday was foretelling of the very low temperatures we felt this week at Baishan AWS.   With temperatures reaching -14C (and feeling much colder) in the morning, I decided to err on the side of health and safety for the students.  Morning exercise and specific uniform policies were suspended temporarily.  Both of these will resume Monday, January 11.

The cold weather has not stopped our teachers from planning and delivering rigorous lessons.  As you'll read throughout this issue, students have been engaged in meaningful lessons ranging from global conservation technology to using manipulative to explore gravity to presenting their videos of Chinese novels. 

寒冷的天气并没有阻挡我们老师严格的授课计划和教学。正如您在本期周讯中所读到的,学生们一直在学习有意义的课程,从全球环保科技到使用操纵器探索地心引力,再到展示学生们自己创作的中国小说视频。


Semester 2 Extra-curricular Activities


One of the characteristics that make Baishan AWS different is our emphasis on developing the culture of learning.  Baishan AWS believes that having holistic learning experiences means giving students opportunities to explore their passions in education.  As such, Baishan AWS invests a great deal in providing the best extra-curricular experiences.  Our semester 2 offerings are being finalized.  In order to do this, I've explained the below list of ECAs and asked all of the students to rank them following based on interest-levels.  While we will make every effort to place students in top choices, ECA selections cannot be guaranteed.  Scheduling and student interest levels affect what and when we offer.

Humanities with Ms. Brauer 人文科学


Our Grade 9 geographers are finishing their in-depth study of global water resources this week. First, theyre focusing on cutting-edge conservation technologies. Then theyre meeting some of the teen activists shaping our global conversations about water resources, equity, and access. 

本周九年级的地理学家们完成了对全球水资源的深入研究。首先,学生们专注研究了尖端的环保技术,然后,他们学习了一些青少年活动家如何激发人们对水资源,公平和获取可饮用水的全球关注。   


Our Grade 10/11 historians have dusted off their Renaissance recollections and are delving into the political machinations and manipulations of Machiavelli. As a ruler, is it better to be loved or to be feared?

Our Grade 11 AP geographers are finishing their study of the spread of cultural attributes. If a Berliner enjoys Syrian food at a restaurant opened by a refugee, is that the same kind of cultural exchange as an American digging K-pop or a teenager here wearing Supreme? How do our ideas and innovations spread?

Chinese Zhongkao with Mr. Zhan



我们生活的世界,空间如此广阔,时间如此漫长,不是我们这些弱小的生命体能够完全体会到的。但是,我们人类除了拥有空间感之外,还拥有精神,它能够穿越一切空间和时间,造就一种永恒的力量。那么,应该如何构建人的精神世界,让它能够发挥这种作用呢? 本周9年级的学生们学习了当代作家毕淑敏的《精神的三间小屋》。学生们从中懂得了应该这样修建自己的精神小屋:给爱留下足够的容量;规划自己的职业生涯,使事业和人生呈现缤纷和谐、相得益彰的局面;培养独立思考的能力。

The world we live in is so vast in space and so long in time, which can't be fully realized by our weak beings. However, in addition to the sense of space, we human beings also have spirit, which can travel through all space and time to create an eternal power. So, how to build the spiritual world of human beings, so that it can play this role? This week, the students of grade 9 studied three cabins of spirit by contemporary writer Bi Shumin. The students learned that they should build their own spiritual cottage in this way: leave enough capacity for love; plan their own career to make their career and life colorful and harmonious; cultivate the ability of independent thinking.


Visual Arts with Mr. Brandt 视觉艺术


All of the art students have continued to develop a drawing strategy involving linear perspective.  Linear perspective is the strategy of creating the illusion of form that descends in space by using lines.  Appealing more to artists who like logical and more mathematic ways of being creative, linear perspective can have direct applications to architecture, interior design, mechanical engineering, comic designs, as well as many fine arts. 

本周所有艺术课的学生都学习了一种涉及线性透视的绘画技巧。线性透视法是一种通过线条创造形式幻觉的方法。线性透视法更能吸引那些喜欢用逻辑和数学方法进行创作的艺术家,它可以直接应用于建筑、室内设计、机械工程、漫画设计以及许多工艺美术。


Students were introduced to the strategy early in the week with 1-point perspective drawing.  Students built on their knowledge Thursday when they practiced with 2-point perspective drawing.  This lesson challenged them to create a fantasy scene that incorporated geometric and irregular forms that overlap.

在本周初,学生们通过1点透视图学习了这种绘画技巧。本周四,学生们通过练习两点透视图,巩固了所学的知识。这一课要求学生们创造一个结合几何图形和不规则图形重叠的幻想场景。


The Blue Tie Drawing students will create a final artwork using drawing skills that combine with their imagination.

The Green and Red Tie Painting students will combine their knowledge of 2-point perspective with the painting style of Impressionism.

All students will be documenting their learning, typing reflections, and submitting a .PDF  as a summative unit grade.

Mathematics with Mr. Guo 数学

Grade 9 students continued to analyze three-dimensional figures by using the relationships among its vertices, edges, and faces. They learned to calculate the surface area and volume of regular Prisms, Pyramids and a sphere.

九年级的同学通过顶点,边和面去分析3D立体图形。他们还学会了计算棱柱,棱锥,球体的表面积和体积。


Grade 10 students started a new topic on Probability. They learned English words to describe the probability of an event and to find the probability of an event using theoretical, experimental and simulation methods (tree-diagram).

十年级开始了新一章概率的学习。他们学习了形容概率的英语单词和计算概率的三种方法:理论、实验、模拟(树状图)。


Grade 11 students started a new topic on sequence and series. They identified mathematical patterns found in a sequence arithmetic or geometric) and used a formula to find the nth term of a sequence and nth partial sum of a series.

十一年级开始学习数列,他们观察数列的规律(等差或等比)并用公式去推导出第n项和计算前n项和。


English Language Arts with Ms. Jia and Ms. Jenn 英语语言文学



In ELA, we are at the end of Unit 2. This week, students reviewed the unit concepts and texts and took their unit exam. Next week is the "Writer's Workshop" week. Students in all grades will produce a piece of writing that explores the ideas and concepts from the units. In 11th grade, students are working on writing a really good argument. In 10th grade, students will practice the art of persuasive writing, and in 9th grade, students will delve into exploring and writing a character analysis essay.

Ms. Jenn is particularly proud of the students who took time out of their holiday break to participate in the World Scholar's Cup competition on December 19th and 20th. For two days, students answered questions, wrote essays, and debated students from other schools in Qingdao and from around China. Three of the four teams that participated qualified for the Semi-Global Round in Shanghai in July 2021. Go Gators!

Ms. Jenn老师特别对在假期中抽出时间参加1219日和20日世界学者杯比赛的学生感到骄傲。两天来,学生们在比赛中回答问题,撰写文章,并与来自青岛其他学校和中国各地的学生进行辩论。我们的四支参赛队伍中有三支获得了20217月在上海举行的半决赛资格。加油,鳄鱼们!


Physical and Health Education with Coach Faamamafa 体育


This week we focus on how to play basketball, I let the students started from the basic of the sport on how to dribble the ball lower than their knees, dribble higher than their knees, dribble level with their heaps, dribble level with their shoulders and cross. After that we separated into two teams and we competed. Students were able to work as a team and improved their communication and developed their basketball skills. Some students already know a lot about basketball, so they were able to help others. This was a good start after the break to get them back to being active and enjoy sports.

本周在体育课上,我们集中练习了篮球技巧,学生们从基础运动开始,学习如何低于膝盖运球,高于膝盖运球,水平运球及交叉运球。之后,学生们分成两队进行比赛。学生们能够作为一个团队来进行合作,这不仅提高了他们的篮球技能,也提高了他们的沟通能力。有些学生篮球运动掌握的非常好,他们能够主动帮助别的同学。圣诞假期回来之后这是一个很好的开始,篮球可以让他们恢复活跃,享受运动。



Physics with Mr. Kytle 物理


Greetings! This week the students are examining the the Force of Gravity and how it is measured. We began this week with a practical activity in which the students used Newton Meters/Spring Balances to measure the force of Gravity using different weights.  The students were able to determine a linear correlation between the amount of weight and the force of Gravity. This is the reason why we travel around our Sun as well as why we travel around the center of our Spiral Galaxy, the Milky Way. The students expanded upon this concept on Thursday by working together to examine the data that they collected.

Welcome back! 

In this week, students learned intermolecular force(IMF), concentration in solutions and dilutions. Students can deduce and distinguish different IMF among London force, explain the physical properties Dipole-dipole force and Hydrogen bonding, do stoichiometry problems by using concentrations, moles, volumes and mass in a solution reaction, dilute solutions to lower concentration by adding water.

这个星期,11年级化学学习了分子间作用力,溶液浓度以及溶液的稀释。学生们能够判断区分不同的分子间作用力,使用分子间作用力来解释物质的物理性质,溶液中涉及的浓度计算及其他物理量间的相互转换,溶液如何稀释。


University Guidance and TOEFL with Ms. Du 美国大学升学指导课


After two weeks' Christmas Holidays, I first looked back how students spent their days and shared how certain students effectively made use of their time during those days and set examples for others. Then I invited students to make new year's resolutions and think about how to achieve them. Since COVID-19 is still serious worldwide, I suggest students seek opportunities to do some part-time jobs or internships locally and take advantage of recourses provided by their parents or school. I analyzed what a good part-time is and encouraged them to make a plan to do that.  Surprisingly, not long after class, several parents contacted me and asked how they could help their kids to do that. I believe that's a good start.

在两周的圣诞节假期之后,我首先回顾了学生们是如何度过他们假期的,并分享了某些学生是如何有效地利用他们的时间并为其他人树立榜样的。然后我邀请学生们制定新年计划,并思考如何实现这些计划。由于COVID-19在世界范围内仍然很严重,我建议学生们寻找机会在当地做一些兼职或实习,并利用他们的父母或学校提供的资源。我分析了什么是好的兼职,并鼓励他们为此制定计划。令人惊讶的是,下课没多久,几位家长就联系我,问他们如何帮助孩子做到这一点。我相信这是个好的开始。


Chinese Language with Ms. Zheng 中国文学






本周10年级学生对第三单元所学的内容进行了复习并测试。开始学习第四单元——风俗与节日文化。我们学习了中国茶酒文化的起源、历史及茶酒的种类,学习了饮食文化及中国的八大菜系。接下来我们会学习不同国家和地区的节日文化,了解节日背后的文化内涵,提升跨文化交际能力。

This week, grade 10 students reviewed and tested what they learned in unit 3. We started to learn Unit 4 of the customs and festival culture. We have studied the origin, history and types of Chinese tea and wine culture. We have also studied the catering culture and eight Chinese cuisines. Next, we will learn the festival culture of different countries and regions, understand the cultural connotation behind the festival, and improve cross-cultural communication ability.


11年级的同学继续进行阅读专题——小说阅读和实用文阅读的练习,提高阅读分析和解题能力。同学们还讲解展示了他们所选定的节日专题,通过视频或PPT的形式,来分享他们的独立研究成果。

The students of Grade 11 continued to practice reading of novels and practical articles to improve their reading analysis and problem-solving ability. The students also explained and displayed their selected Festival topics, and shared their independent research results in the form of video and PPT.
