Happy Yuánxiāo Jié!  元宵节快乐

Today, Friday, marks the end of the Spring Festival Holiday and, while we have actually been in school this week, I hope that all students and families have enjoyed time with relatives and have eaten plenty of dumplings and shàng yuán. 今天是元宵节,标志着中国传统春节假期的结束,虽然这周我们已经返回了校园,但我希望今天所有的学生和家庭都能享受与亲人们在一起吃饺子和元宵的快乐时光。


Our teachers and students were able to quickly get back into the routine of teaching and learning. 我们的老师和学生们本周已经快速地回归到正常的教学活动中了。


As part of helping to develop the well-rounded learner who is befitting of the Annie Wright name, Baishan AWS has developed a new inititiative.  The Positive Behavior Reward (PBR) initiative rewards students for doing the kind and responsible gestures that often times get unnoticed an unsupported.

作为帮助培养安妮怀特高中全面学习者的一部分,白珊·安妮高中开展了一项新的活动:积极行为奖励(PBR)计划,奖励学生做出友好和负责任的行为,这些行为往往是学生们出于真心的,善意的并容易被忽视的行为。


The PBR initiative consists of each of our students having a list of behaviors that are not directly assessed in the classrooms, but are important to the learning culture of the schools.  The Blue and Green Ties have this page in their planners.  The Red Ties have a seperate page.  Teachers, staff, and dorm faculty have been challenged to notice students who have exhibited these types of behaviors and stamp the students' PBR sheet.   积极行为奖励(PBR)计划为每个学生建立一个行为清单,这些行为不是在课堂上直接评估的,但确对学校的学习文化很重要。蓝带和绿带学生的行为计划附在他们的planner里。红带学生有单独的一页行为清单。教师、教职员工和宿舍教职员工都被要求关注学生平时的行为表现,并在学生的PBR表上盖章。


Students who have received 3 stamps by this past Thursday morning were rewarded with icecream treats today, Friday.

Our next reward day will take place next month when we reward students who have achieved six stamps. 下一个奖励日将在下个月举行,届时我们将奖励获得六枚印章的学生。


With this initiative, we hope to foster routine positive habits in students and, in doing so, further raise the standards of our Baishan Annie Wright students. 通过这一举措,我们希望在学生中培养积极的日常习惯,从而进一步提高我们白珊·安妮高中学生的水平。


Humanities with Ms. Brauer 人文科学


Our Grade 9 geographers are analyzing data from charts, graphs, and academic journals to evaluate whether global warming is part of Earths natural cycles or something different. Are greenhouse gases the problem? Ask Justin (our Earth), who is wearing six jackets (greenhouse gases) here, in a demonstration of what trapping in heat feels like over time hot and not too comfortable!  本周九年级的地理学家们通过分析来自图表、表格和学术期刊的一些数据,评估了全球变暖是地球自然循环的一部分,还是其他的问题。温室气体是主要原因吗?我们让学生Justin来扮演地球,他穿上六件外套(模拟温室气体),随着时间的推移,向我们展示并描述热量被困住的感觉...热,不太舒服!


Our Grade10 historians have begun their study of the Age of Exploration and Disruption an era when suddenly humans were on the move. Why did Europeans look outward and want to start exploring and taking over the rest of the world? And did Zheng He set off with his treasure ships for similar reasons, or with different motivations?  本周十年级的历史学家们已经开始研究一个充满探索和破坏的时代——一个人类突然开始扩张的时代。为什么欧洲人向外看,想开始探索和接管世界其他地区?郑和带着他的宝船出发是出于相似的原因,还是出于不同的动机?


Our Grade 11 AP geographers have begun their study of agriculture. Food is such an integral part of culture, and agriculture practices around the world are interesting, adaptive, and varied. But agriculture is also a globalized multi-billion-dollar industry. Were studying these interactions between humans and our environment all the way from the terrace to the transnational, the burned clearing to the biotech lab.  本周11年级的AP地理学家们已经开始学习农业。食物是文化不可或缺的一部分,世界各地的农业实践有趣、适应性强、并具有多样性。但农业也是一个全球化的数十亿美元的产业。我们一直在研究人类与环境之间的相互作用,从梯田到跨国公司,从被烧毁的空地到生物技术实验室。


Mathematics with Mr. Guo

It's great to be back to the classroom and face-to-face teaching. Grade 11 students revised how to find the modulus and argument of a complex number and convert complex numbers between rectangular form and polar form. Then we learned the powers of complex numbers and DeMoivre's Theorem. Students found connections between Trigonometry and Complex numbers.很高兴能回到教室的面对面教学。十一年级的同学们复习了怎样计算复数的模和参数,怎样转换复数的代数、三角和指数形式。然后我们学习了复数的指数和棣美弗定律,学生们建立了三角函数和复数的联系。


Grade 10 students gained better understanding of Conditional Probability this week. They learned to determine conditional probabilities through meaning and formula and then decide if the events are independent or not. Language is a challenge for them in this unit, hopefully, they picked up some strategies dealing with unfamiliar words.十年级的同学们本周对条件概率有了更好的理解。他们学习着用含义和公式的办法去计算条件概率,并用结算结果去判断事件的独立性。语言是这一单元的挑战,希望他们发现了一些处理不熟悉单词的策略。


Grade 9 students worked on the fundamental counting principle this week. They identified the difference between Permutations and Combinations. Then we tried to find probability of an event using theoretical, experimental and simulation methods and the probability of multiple events. We stimulated the famous Monty Hall Problem in class, which gave them a shocking result. 九年级的学生们本周学习了基础计数原理,他们对比发现了排列和组合的区别。然后我们尝试着用理论、实验和模拟的办法去计算一个或多个事件的概率。我们在课堂上模拟了著名的蒙提霍尔三门问题,模拟结果令人震惊。

“处处是创造之地,天天是创造之时,人人是创造之人,这是9年级学生本周在学习了陶行知的《创造宣言》之后印象最深刻的一句话。学习这篇文章,学生们澄清了环境太平凡了,不能创造生活太单调了,不能创造年级太小,不能创造我太无能了,不能创造以及山穷水尽,走投无路,陷入绝境,等死而已,不能创造等错误认识,激发了勇于创造的信心和乐于创造的的热情。另外,本周学习了议论文的简单写法,懂得了要合理论证的四个注意事项,并进行了片段练习。"Everywhere is the place of creation, every day is the time of creation, and everyone is the person of creation." this is the most impressive sentence of grade 9 students after learning Tao Xingzhi's "Declaration of creation" this week. After studying this article, the students clarified the misconceptions such as "the environment is too ordinary to create", "life is too monotonous to create", "grade is too small to create", "I am too incompetent to create" and "at the end of my life, I have no way to go, I'm in a desperate situation, I'm just waiting to die, I can't create", which stimulated the courage to create and the enthusiasm to create enthusiasm. In addition, this week, I learned the simple writing method of argumentative essays, understood the four points for attention in reasonable argumentation, and carried out fragment exercises.


Visual Arts with Mr. Brandt 视觉艺术


The visual art students have completed the first of three major assignments in this unit.  The first assignment of researching and discussing why artists have created artworks, and what their purpose was, has been submitted and graded.   本周在视觉艺术课上,学生们完成了本单元三个主要作业中的第一个。学生们研究和讨论了艺术家为什么创作艺术作品,以及他们的目的是什么。学生的第一个作业任务已经提交并评分。


Assignment two challenges the students to analyze the elements and principles of their selected artworks, then compare them with each other.  Students will be submitting their 3-slide .pdf Tuesday, March 2. 本单元第二个主要作业要求学生分析所选作品的元素和构图规则,然后进行比较。学生们将于3月2日下星期二之前提交3张幻灯片.pdf。

ARABIC 1 - Blue Tie





English Language Arts with Ms. Jia and Ms. Jenn 英语语言文学


It is great to back in school and back to work studying and analyzing how readers read and how writers write. The Blue Ties spent the week comparing the balcony scene in West Side Story to the balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet, and digging into the language of Shakespeare. The Green Ties did some close reading of Maus Part I to identify all the different types of conflicts happening scene by scene. And, the Red Ties finished reading 1984  and engaged in a long, Socratic-seminar-style discussion of the ideas in the novel and relevance of Winston and Big Brother in our world today.

非常高兴我们又重新回到了校园!本周我们学习和分析了读者应该如何进行阅读,作家如何进行写作 。九年级蓝带学生们本周比较了《西区故事》中的阳台场景和《罗密欧与朱丽叶》中的阳台场景,并深入研究了莎士比亚的语言。十年级绿带学生们仔细阅读了《鼠族》的第一部分,找出了一幕接一幕发生的所有不同类型的矛盾冲突。十一年级红带学生本周读完了小说《1984》,并进行了一个较长的苏格拉底式的研讨会式的讨论,分析了小说中的思想以及温斯顿和老大哥在当今世界的相关性。


Chinese Literature & Culture with Ms. Emilia  中国文学



      新学期开学第一周,我们对寒假作业进行了收集、分析和总结,找出完成优秀的作品和亮点,总结不足并进行指导和改进。结合同学们的寒假阅读《麦田里的守望者》,10年级同学一起讨论分享了这本书的主要内容,人物形象,以及这本书对社会的影响和对文化的影响,每个同学都表达了自己独特的心得体会和收获。同时,我们对本学期的主要学习内容进行了单元概述和介绍,希望良好的开始可以为同学们的新学期助力。In the first week of the new semester, we collected, analyzed and summarized the winter holiday homework, found out the outstanding works and highlights, summarized the deficiencies, and conducted guidance and improvement. Combined with the holiday reading of the catcher in the rye, the students of Grade 10 discussed and shared the main content of the book, the image of the characters, and the influence of the book on society and culture. Each student expressed his own unique experience and harvest. Another, we summarize and introduce the main learning content of this semester, hoping that a good start can help the students to improve in the new semester.


      11年级中文课,对本学期四个单元的主要内容和培养目标以及学习任务进行了讲解和论述,重点分析了如何结合资料和数据,全面深入地探索研究,做好社会时事热点专题的学术性实践报告。另外,我们开始着手学习语法中的句子——特殊句式。在阅读能力提升方面,我们会一起研读经典著作——《百年孤独》。For the Grade 11, we explained and discussed the main contents of the four units, learning objectives and learning tasks of Chinese class in this semester, with emphasis on how to combine materials and data, comprehensively and deeply explore and research, and make academic practice reports on hot topics of social current affairs. In addition, we began to learn the sentences in grammar - special sentence patterns. In the aspect of reading ability improvement, we will study the classic book "one hundred years of solitude" step by step.


Physical and Health Education with Coach Faamamafa 体育

First week for the students to get back to Physical Health Education class after the Lunar holiday. So I'd make sure they lost few calories that they hav gained from the holiday. We kick off our class with jogging around the gym then get into two teams and play football(soccer). Explain the rules and how to play and make sure they get to play as a team. Two teams competed for three points then take a break, change side and did handball also competed for 3 points. Students were able to run around kicking the soccer ball and throw the handball around the gym. Finishing up with some stretching and talk about our classes for this second semester. 本周是学生们春节假期结束后第一周上体育课,所以我要让他们运动并减少节日期间摄入的卡路里。开始上课后,我们先在体育馆慢跑,然后分成两队踢足球。我给学生们解释了比赛规则,并确保他们能成为一个团队。两队争夺3分,然后休息,之后学生们换边打手球,也争夺3分。学生们可以在体育馆里跑来跑去踢足球和扔手球。最后我们做了一些伸展运动,并讲解了第二学期要进行的课程。

  


Physics with Mr. Kytle 物理


This week we really began to look at Physical Forces. We are studying how we illustrate those forces and as well as how we take them into consideration. The students began to study Force Arrows and how a variety of Forces act upon objects even when objects appear to be motionless. This greater understanding will allow us to springboard into a greater appreciation for the complexity of nature structures and human endeavors.  本周我们真正开始研究物理力。我们正在研究如何证明这些力的存在,以及我们如何描述这些力。学生们开始学习用箭头描述力,以及各种力是如何作用在物体上的,即使物体看起来是静止的。这种更深刻的理解将加深我们对自然界结构和人类努力的复杂性的更深刻的理解。

Chemistry with Ms. Jiajia 化学课


In this week students were learning thermodynamics, including endothermic and exothermic processes, specific heat capacity, calorimeter, enthalpy, bond enthalpy, enthalpy change of reaction, standard enthalpy of combustion and Hesss Law. students can be able to translate between a balanced chemical reaction and a calculation involving the energies of bonds broken and bonds formed within the reaction. In addition, students can analyze calorimetry data and apply mathematical routines to calculate or estimate the heat transferred and the overall enthalpy of a reaction. 这个星期,学生在学习热化学,这包涵吸热放热反应,比热容,热量计,焓,反应焓,燃烧焓,化学键焓以及Hess定律。学生能够在平衡化学反应和反应中键断裂和键形成键的能量之间进行转换。此外,学生可以通过量热计来测量反应中的焓变,分析量热数据和应用数学来计算或估计热传递和反应的总焓。

University Guidance and TOEFL with Ms. Du 美国大学升学指导课


This semester, we will mainly work on writing college application essays. This week, students tried to write a Bio-Poem, which  helps the students generate seed ideas, one of which may eventually grow into a college admission essay. The more ideas they develop now, the easier the writing will be when the time comes. For reference, students got a Bio-Poem sample and I reviewed the format with them.  The answers to any of these questions could be the basis for a college admission essay. The great thing is that I learned more about some students by reading their poems.  Next week, a few students will share their poem with the whole class. That must be fun!这学期,我们将主要会进行大学申请论文的写作指导。本周,学生们试图写一首自传诗,他们会形成一些“想法的种子”,其中某一个可能最终会发展成大学申请论文的主题。他们现在产生的想法越多,到时候的写作就会越容易。作为参考,我给学生们发了自传诗的样诗,和他们一起学习了写作格式。这些问题的答案可以作为大学入学论文的基础。最棒的是,通过读一些学生的诗歌,我对他们有了更充分的了解。下周学生们将和同学分享他们的诗。一定会很有趣!
