Our Weekly Update is an opportunity for us to share all of the great learning experiences that take place both in and outside of our classroom, and is a testament to our commitment to communication with our parents as well as the community. This week's Weekly Update includes many teachers discussing the final units of the academic year. Lesson planning gives way to a sense of urgency for teachers and students. Teachers begin looking to see which students are on upper level of the grade thresholds -- the students who almost make the next letter grade higher. Students become more anxious about their grades and quickly realize how soon the end of the year is.
本期周讯中,很多老师都提到了本学年最后一单元的教学。从教学计划中可以看到老师和学生们的紧迫感。老师们开始观察哪些学生处于年级门槛的较高水平——那些成绩等级分数更高的学生。学生们也意识到本学年马上就结束了,对自己的成绩也越来越关注。
Baishan AWS has reacted to this annual routine by making certain all assignments and assessments in SchoolPal are current. In doing so, teacher are also able to identify individual students who need a last push to get them into the next grade.

I will be having individual conferences with students who are making poor grades or are in danger of not getting credit for a class. I ask that parents complement by asking their child which courses need the most attention.

Physics with Mr. Richard 物理
We are heading into the final stretch of this semester and the students are working towards expanding their knowledge of the laws that govern the motion of objects. This week we examined inertia as well as instantaneous speed. The students are working on solving Physics related word problems and doing calculations using a variety of formulas. The students also have an independent project on motion which they are completing at home. The students seem eager to push themselves to work hard in order to get as much accomplished as we can in the time we have left.

English Language Arts with Ms. Jia and Ms. Jenn 英语语言文学
Students were back to work this week after their exciting trip to Dongying. In 9th grade, students finished the novel Never Let Me Go, and held their final Socratic seminar of the year. In 10th grade, students finished reading their individual novels, completed note-taking in their interactive notebooks, and prepared to create video presentations of literary analysis during the final weeks of the unit. In 11th grade, students created some graffiti linking the characters and themes in Twelfth Night to their own ideas before turning their attention to a research question about 16th Century England and the culture in which Shakespeare was writing.

Chinese Studies with Mr. Zhan 中国文学
In social communication, most people are used to speaking directly, and in some cases, euphemistic and implicit expression will have better effect. This week, the ninth grade students studied Zou Ji satirizes the king of Qi and accepts remonstrance. In this story, Zou Ji is not complacent in the face of praise from his family and flattery from his guests. Instead, he makes rational thinking and realizes the truth of "governing the country" from "governing the family", and then persuades king Qi Wei to accept the advice tactfully and implicitly. From this story, students feel the amazing effect of analogy. In addition, according to their own preferences, students rewrite the classical Chinese into diary or script, which helps to cultivate students' creative expression ability.
在社会交往中,一般人习惯于直截了当的说话,而在某些情况下,委婉含蓄的表达会有更好的效果。本周,9年级学生学习了《邹忌讽齐王纳谏》。在这个故事中,邹忌面对家人的赞美和客人的奉承,没有沾沾自喜,而是做了理性的思考,从“治家”中悟出“治国”的道理,然后委婉含蓄地说服了齐威王纳谏。从这个故事中,学生们感受到了“类比”这种说话方式的惊人效果。另外,学生们根据自己的喜好,把这篇文言文改写成日记体或剧本,这有助于培养学生们创意表达的能力。
Chinese Literature & Culture with Ms. Emilia 中国文学
This week Grade 10 studied the brilliant scientific and technological achievements of ancient China, including astronomy, medicine, mathematics, agriculture and other different fields. While learning about ancient scientific and technological achievements and splendid civilization, the students also increased their national pride and interest in exploring technology. Next, we will study and discuss the achievements made in calligraphy, music, opera and other fields.

The students of grade 11 have revised and improved their social research essay many times and successfully completed them! They have challenged themselves and made new breakthroughs and improvements in their writing ability and academic research. While preparing for the AP exam, we began to review what we had learned in this semester to make full preparations for the final exam.

University Guidance & TOEFL with Ms. Du大学升学指导和托福教学
This week, G10 students finished their research on a certain American university and completed the poster. In class, they were required to update their SCOIR by following 3-5 universities. Before adding to list, students need to ensure that those candidate schools are accessible for them. Therefore, they logged onto the official websites and checked the requirements to make their list reasonable. In this process, students got more familiar with the layout of the websites and knew how to effectively got the information they needed. For G11, they are still working hard to prepare their AP exams which will be held next week. Best wishes to them!

In TOEFL classes, the overall performance of both G9&10 is still improving! They interacted in class, answered questions actively, corrected their own mistakes with a good attitude. In the listening section, lectures are still a big challenge for them due to the lecture length, vocabulary, listening ability, concentration, note taking skill. etc. The good news is that most students are trying. Keep it!

Humanities with Ms. Brauer 人文科学
We shifted our focus in World Geography from voluntary migration to the study of refugees, who are forced to flee their homes by violence or war. We’ve grounded this study in the world’s response to refugees during and after WWII, but we’ll spend more time looking at more recent examples, like the waves of refugees who’ve fled Syria and the Sudan. 本周在世界地理课上,我们把学习重点从主动移民转移到研究难民的问题上,他们因暴力或战争而被迫逃离家园。我们把这项研究的基础放在二战期间和战后世界对难民的反应上,但我们会花更多的时间来研究近期的一些案列,比如逃离叙利亚和苏丹的难民潮。
Our Grade 10/11 historians are finishing up our study of the end of WWII with two topics that are very difficult to grapple with, but so important to understand clearly: The Holocaust, and the US decision to drop two atomic bombs in Japan. At the end of this week, we’ll shift gears, because after the war, the Allied relationship between the US and Soviet Union didn’t stay warm for long. This is the AP Geographers’ last week of preparation before the exam. They’ve been working hard on this material all year, and now we’re doing a systematic review of all seven units, filling in gaps and refreshing the concepts we studied early in the year. After Friday, their most important task will be to shift their sleep schedule later, so when they take their AP exams from midnight to 3am next week, they’ll be alert and focused, with plenty of energy to finish these demanding exams. I’ve never had to ask parents this before, but we’ll need your help in encouraging the 11s to stay up til 3am every night – having fun and playing videos; whatever keeps them alert and engaged – and then sleeping in as late as possible, to get a solid 8-9+ hours of sleep every night. At this point, nothing will help their test performance more than a few days of very good sleep, and the ability to stay alert and awake after midnight – so your help with this will be invaluable!

Mathematics with Mr. Guo 数学
Grade 10 students learned to graph Sine and Cosine functions both manually and using technology. They tried to identify amplitude, frequency and period from the functions and the graphs. We also discussed the application of periodic functions in our life.

Grade 11 students continued their unit on Vectors. We reviewed the magnitude, direction, and component form of a vector. Then we looked at how to perform vector addition and scalar multiplication and used the graphical meaning of vector addition to solve real-world problems.

Grade 9 students learned to use radian measure to compute arc length and area of a sector. They tried to calculate the linear and angular velocities of objects and understand the relationship between them. Then they solved applied problems involving arc length and rotation.

For most of the year, Art teachers teach the fundamentals and how to apply them with different strategies and techniques. The students build their skills and explore various concepts and strategies. Now, as the last unit of the year, the students are applying all of their knowledge to their own, personal expressions.

Student in grades 9 - 11 can be seen immediately getting their artwork and materials as soon as they enter, seemingly eager to get started.

What's more, students are separating themselves based on their own motivations. Green Tie Katherine has excelled these past few weeks and is now receiving customized lessons. Red Tie Max is continuing to build his illustration portfolio. Most noticeably, however, is Red Tie Zoey who is working on a large stretched canvas.

This week we are continuing our badminton practice to get the students ready for the competition next week. Students take badminton as their first priority in the gym. So we are covering all the basic skills of badminton starting from:
How to move around the court?
How to serve the the birdie in the right direction.
How to hold the racket.
How the lines work and so on.

Students get to work individually, team double and mix double. Mastering the basic is super important in any sport and also most students are doing great with their performance doing the class. We will be continuing working on our badminton team and get everything done before the tournament.
