Our past updates have focused primarily on how we are developing the whole learner through extra-curricular activities and non-academic classes. This is further evidenced by our upcoming school events that you will read about at the top of this issue. It is true that these are part of what makes Baishan AWS a premier school.

This issue, however, highlights our quality Science and Math programs. We have impressive Math and Science teachers who are doing some amazing work with the students. Mr. Siddiqui's AP Pre-calculus students apply advanced concepts to real-world circular motion problems.

October 29 - Halloween Party 10月29日 万圣节Party
Baishan AWS is hosting the Annual Halloween Party Friday, October 29 in the afternoon. The older Red and Green Ties will join teacher teams to help prepare the activities. The younger Blue and Yellow Ties will combine with the Baishan School Middle School students. IB Mathematics AI SL with Ms. Guedes IB数学
This week the IBDP Mathematics students continued learning Trigonometry. They reviewed important trigonometric ratios, rules, and formulas. Geometry and Algebra II with Ms. Guedes 几何和代数II
The Geometry students focused on important mathematical vocabulary related to angles formed by two lines and a transverse. The Algebra 2 students started reviewing how to find slope of a line and learned to apply their understanding of slope to describe linear functions. This week, students learned about the scientific method and started to develop personal investigations using the step by step approach. We are moving in to the end of our first unit in IBDP Biology Cell Biology and working on review key components for the summative investigation next week.

Integrated Sciences with Mr. Silva 科学
This week, students worked on their first laboratory report. They used a simple chemical reaction to formulate predictions using the scientific method. Safety skills and how to use scientific tools are the foundation skills for more complex investigations in the following units. They learned about Vernier graphical analysis software and new ways to collect data in the science lab.

This week the students went little ahead in the application of circular motion concepts in real life. They learned about the banking of roads, well of death, bending of cyclists at the turns. They were demonstrated - motor bike racers bending at the sharp turns and the artists performing in the well of death. 本周,学生们了解了圆周运动概念在实际生活中的运用。学生们学习了道路的堤岸、摩托车特技表演、自行车转弯时的弯道,观看了摩托车选手在急转弯时弯腰,艺术家们在死亡之井里面的特技表演。

This week closed with our students learning about the important milestones related to getting accepted into college. Thank you to Mr. Xu Lu for the help for sharing his wisdom on application deadlines and the many requirements need along the way, including advice about TOEFL.

This week in American History we covered the formation of the English colonies through the end of the Wars for Empire with the victory of the British over the French. Students started projects to explore Enlightenment figures.

In IB Social and Cultural Anthropology we covered the Areas of Inquiry and Big Questions for anthropologists. English at AWS 英语
Coming back to school after Parent-Teacher Conferences and a week of language assessment and PSAT testing, students worked this week on making certain that they were meeting learning objectives and doing the work. Yellow Ties have embarked on the Hero's Journey; Blue Ties reviewed writing theme statements and began to prepare for a unit-ending Socratic Seminar; Green Ties caught up on assessments and questioned teachers in order to practice writing embedded interviews; and Red Ties began writing an argument both as a unit assessment and in preparation for an upcoming TOEFL exam. All students are showing progress with language learning, thanks to their own hard work and the support of our English department teachers as well as all subject teachers! This week the students learn two songs. Happy by Pharell Williams and Man In the Mirror by Michael Jackson. They are preparing their repertoires for their music showcase in end of January.

This week, the Grade 9 & 10 students finished their Ultimate Frisbee Unit. A packed week in which they had some presentations, a written quiz, and even time to play a game where the main skills of the sports were assessed. The students worked hard on their catching, backhand and forehand throwing, and their positioning on the field. In this part, we will learn different academic ideas in ancient China, such as Confucianism, Taoism, Legalism, etc. We comprehensively and carefully analyzed the propositions and viewpoints of Confucius, Mencius and Xunzi, and studied the texts of the Analects of Confucius and Chapter II of Mencius, so as to help students better understand the Confucianism of Chinese cultural and ideological enlightenment and cultivate their appreciation ability of classical Chinese.
文学经典话剧《茶馆》中有50多个人物,在了解基本的人物和故事情节后,本周我们对重点的几个人物进行了深入的分析和解读,同学们分享了各自对人物形象的理解,并结合人物的社会阶层阐述了所代表的社会群体特征,人物的文学价值和社会影响,写成一篇人物分析文章,提升了语言表达能力和写作能力。There are more than 50 characters in the literary classic drama Teahouse. For the G11 students, after understanding the basic characters and plot, this week we conducted an in-depth analysis and interpretation of several key characters. The students shared their understanding of the characters, and explained the social group characteristics, literary value and social influence of the characters in combination with their social strata, writing a character analysis article improves the language expression ability and writing ability.
