University Guidance

Baishan AWS is committed to doing all we can to preparing students for life after high school.  We are proud to have at least one period each week when students get information about what they need to know and begin preparing for their college applications. The 10th grade and the 11th grade students receive guidance on the important questions and processes that will help to ensure they get the most appropriate opportunities after high school.

PSAT

Baishan AWS is proud to offer this College Board test that provides our students with an opportunity to practice the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).  This test will take place here at Baishan Campus during the school day and will teach the students what the real test will be like when that time arrives.

Collaborative Learning Room

We know that students need dedicated learning spaces that meet their needs.  Sometimes their needs are to have more independent study time.  Sometimes students need a partner to help them with an assignment, and sometimes students need to work in larger groups.  Baishan AWS has accounted for these different learning needs by creating a Collaborative Learning Room that provides students with each of these.  The space has individual desks, small tables, and a larger area with a white board and a couch.  Students will be encouraged to use this space both during class time and when they find some extra time in their schedules.

Dedicated Homework Time

This year's evening time will allow students to complete the work that was assigned by the teachers during the day.  Paired with a more structured evening rules, this will provide students with much more learning time.  We feel that this structure to our evening homework support time will help to support and add to their learning.  The evening homework support classes have been divided into three distinct periods:

•    Period 1: Silent individual time -- this is a time when students hold themselves accountable for trying to find the solutions to problems by themselves.  Instead of relying on others to help, this time challenges students to re-read and persist with problem-solving.

•    Period 2: Paired time -- Although not required, students have the option during Period 2 to quietly ask a classmate about questions related to a shared assignment.

•    Period 3: Shared learning -- Again, although not required, students can use this time to have small group discussions about teacher assignments and content introduced during the day.

Get Wright Time

Utilizing the two words "Wright" and "right" that sound the same but have different meanings, this is a 15-minute time when students have more opportunities to practice making responsible decisions with their time.

As a responsible school that is dedicated to continually reflecting on and adjusting to our students' needs, we learned from the past semester of eLearning.  Baishan AWS learned that students who got just one step behind tended to quickly become disengaged and stop communicating with teachers.  Get Wright Time is a time when students are required to select one teacher each day to go to for 15 minutes and ask about missed assignments or follow-up about challenging concepts.  Essentially, both students and teachers get an extra chance to catch up with an issue before the student gets even one step behind.  Students must take the initiative to sign up for this teacher sometime during the day.

Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs)

ECAs are non-credit classes that help to make school and learning meaningful.  These are the classes that help emphasize Baishan AWS's dedication to developing well-rounded, holistic students while helping to make their school-life more interesting.  American universities, in particular, value more than grades and scores; rather, most of these top schools want to know that their students have well-rounded experiences that will prove to make their courses more meaningful.  Activities such as golf, archery, drama, World Scholar's Cup, journalism, and book club help complete the student profile that top universities need to see.

Additionally, ECAs help provide our boarding students with opportunities to disengage at least one period each day, allowing the students to use different parts of their cognition.

Although finding and scheduling expert ECA instructors and coaches is not easy, the Baishan AWS administrative staff persists in making the opportunities available for our students.

Physical Education and Changing Rooms

P.E. has always been important to our school.  However, this year our students will have the changing areas they need in order to put on their P.E. shorts and shirts.  More students mean more opportunities for structured lessons and exercises.

TOEFL

New for this year is the inclusion of TOEFL into the regular curriculum and timetable.  Baishan AWS recognizes that having a qualifying score on language assessments is an important part of university admissions.  It is for this reason that we have created two levels of lessons for our students: regular and higher achieving.

Additional English Language Arts

We've added two levels of English Language Arts for both the 9th and 10th graders so Baishan AWS can further ensure that the students are getting the appropriate challenge based on the student's individual needs.
