Our Weekly Update is an opportunity for us to share all the great learning experiences that take place both in and outside of our classroom, and is a testament to our commitment to communication with our parents as well as the community.

This week has been an exciting build-up to Halloween, which is celebrated in many countries -- a celebrated tradition in the U.S. and many other countries. Both students and teachers have done very well to stay focused on their lessons and teaching containing their excitement for the planned Halloween activities Thursday and costume day Friday.

As you may have read in the Journalism class's recent edition of Annie Writes, Halloween is a tradition that stems from very old Gaelic, Celtic, and Christian traditions. 20th Century traditions include decorating, dressing in costumes, sharing candy, and games. Baishan AWS has done our best to represent these customs by decorating, having fun games on Thursday, dress-up day on Friday, and activities. Mathematics with Mr. Guo 数学
This week, Grade 10 students focused on the story of functions. We begin with set notation, intervals, definition of Function, function notation, domain, and range of functions. We tried to look at the functions verbally, graphically, numerically, as well as algebraically.

Trigonometry is one of the most important unit in our Pre-calculus curriculum. This week, Grade 11 reviewed trigonometry in the right triangle and then expanded their knowledge into any triangle. They derived the sine rule, cosine rule and area of a triangle and applied these rules in solving problems.

Grade 9 did a topic test on solving quadratic equations this week. Then we tried to use Microsoft Excel to graph quadratic functions - parabola. Students concluded that, in order to make the graph reasonably accurate, they need to know axis of symmetry, vertex, y-intercept and x-intercept of the function. Next week, we'll be working on finding this information of quadratic functions.

English Language Arts with Ms. Jia and Ms. Jenn 英语语言文学
In English Language Arts this week, students had the opportunity to show their mastery of the Unit 1 concepts and skills. The week was spent in review for Friday, when students all sat for the end-of-unit assessment. Next week, students will have the opportunity to correct mistakes and make up any missed work before we head into our second units, which begins on November 9th.

Physical and Health Education with Coach Faamamafa 体育
Circle of wellness- This week we managed to work in a circle by providing different games that allow them to work in groups, communicate with each other, create their critical thinking, reaction time, memory recall, teach each other, listening skills and new movement.

SEQ Figure \*ARABIC 12 - Jack-O-Lanterns are part of an ancient tradition that dates back thousands of years. On the night of October 31, people in Northern Europe celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. We place Jack-O-Lanterns around our homes to keep us safe from bad spirits. In the spirit of this festival the students carved Jack-O-Lanterns as part of our Halloween festival. 南瓜灯是万圣节的一个古老传统 ,可以追溯到几千年前。10月31日晚,北欧民众庆祝Samhain,当时人们相信死者的鬼魂会返回地球。人们在家里点燃南瓜灯,来阻止不好的鬼魂的来访。为了让学生们更好地体验这个节日,我们组织了学生雕刻了南瓜灯。
13 - Happy Halloween!!!
This week the students finalized their understanding of atoms and how they can be linked together to form molecules. This information will come in handy later as we will soon start to examine the different forces that exist in the Universe. As it is Halloween this Saturday, I have given over a class to having the students make Jack-O-Lanterns. We will return to our studies of Physics and the students will review for their exam on Scope and Scale which will occur later next week.

Chemistry with Ms. Jiajia 化学
In this week, Grade 11 students carried out an experiment to investigate the physical properties and how Alkali metals (group 1) & Alkaline Earth metals (group 2) react with water. They were socked and excited by what they saw and found.They found alkali were very soft and easily to be cut. They deduced the activity orders of group 1&2 metals through the experiment. They learned “formation of ions” and periodicity including trends of atomic size and ionic size, first ionization energy according to the whole periodic table.

Our grade 9 Geographers are studying rock types and the rock cycle, and (should be!) working hard to prepare for their first unit test next Tuesday.

Our Historians have been working on timelines to bridge their study of ancient Western civilizations and our new focus on the Zhou, Qin and Han Dynasties. They studied a famous timeline called the histogram, which shows 4000 years of human civilization on one very, very long sheet.

Our AP Geographers are finishing up their study of demographics with a focus on migration. Next week they’ll have their second unit exam and we’ll move on to study the metrics and global patterns of economic development.

Chinese Language with Ms. Zheng 中国文学

This week, grade 10th learned Taoist academic thought, representative figure Zhuangzi and his classic work "Xiaoyaoyou". Taoism pursues the way of nature, pure and inaction. Xiaoyaoyou explores the philosophy of life through fables, which contains dialectical factors and atheism tendency. Through the appreciation of the text, we can understand the academic essence of Taoism, the freedom and openness of the spiritual world, and learn the novel ideas, bold imagination, and romantic literary characteristics in Zhuangzi's articles.
11年级本学期的词汇Project——关于词语的专题讲解本周在课堂上,由同学们一一精彩呈现。有的讲了“一字多义”,有的介绍“一语双关”,有的对 “常见混淆词语”进行辨析,还有的对跨文化交际中的词语现象进行了解读。虽然语法作为语言中最难的一部分,有很大的学术挑战性,但是同学们通过自己的研究、分析和探索,都出色地完成了这项作业,并很好地锻炼了他们的表达讲解能力。
This week in AP Chinese class, the students of grade 11th presented their project of Vocabulary one by one. Some talk about "polysemy", some introduce "Pun", some discriminate "common confused words", and some interpret the phenomenon of words in cross-cultural communication. Although grammar is the most difficult part of the language, it has great academic challenges, but through their own research, analysis and exploration, the students have completed this assignment excellently, and exercised their ability of expression and explanation.
Visual Arts with Mr. Brandt 视觉艺术
The Blue Tie 9th grade students have finished their charcoal value studies and will begin a new unit next week. Students will apply their learning of shading and values to their drawings on collaged surfaces. Students are challenged to bring in found papers that they can glue down as a foundation for their next assignments.

The Green and Red Ties have finished the first phase of the research on Precisionist art movement. They are now working on how to apply their research to their own established intentions. After creating slides in either PowerPoint or Keynote, the students make creative decisions regarding composition and design. All the students are encouraged to choose subject that is personal to them in their daily lives.

Chinese Studies with Mr. Zhan 中国文学

This week, grade 9th students continue to learn the "Seizure of Birthday Gift Shipment by Trickery”. According to research, when thinking is visualized, the efficiency of information processing and information transmission will be greatly improved. In teaching, it can make "teaching" clearer and "learning" more relaxed and happier. "Mind map" is one of the technologies to realize "thinking visualization". In this class, the students made mind map based on independent reading, and then explained and shared. When answering the "audience" questions, the announcer sometimes adopts analogy, sometimes by analogy, which shows that students have strong divergent thinking. When encountering unexplained problems, the teacher instructs the students to go back to the article to find clues and information between the lines, to cultivate the students' awareness and ability to "research" the text.
University Guidance with Ms. Du 美国大学升学指导课
At the beginning of class, several students were invited to share their favorite career and one that they had never heard of based on the search on the professional website. Then I distributed the Career Interest Areas handout and lead students to review those six different areas. After that, I told students that I was going to give them a list of careers, and their task would be to try to match each career with the appropriate career interest area. I distributed the Holland Code Career Matching worksheet and students had discussion with their partner and then wrote down their answers. In general, they did a really good job, which means most of them have mastered the main characteristics of each career interest area. More importantly, through this activity students learned about several careers that they considered interesting.
