Our Weekly Update is an opportunity for us to share all of the great learning experiences that take place both in and outside of our classroom, and is a testament to our commitment to communication with our parents as well as the community.

This week's Weekly Update highlights some of the exciting learning activities by all of our faculty. You will be able to read in detail for yourself, but just a quick glance is enough to know that our students truly get engaged in the lessons. PE students ventured into the weight and fitness room. Physics students converted their understandings of physical forces into real-world, 3-D solutions. The extra-curricular activity students even got fired up about burning salts.

I also want to remind all parents about the parent-teacher conference day on Monday, March 29th. Your advisor will be communicating the exact times of the meetings this coming week. The Green Tie students will arrive to school around lunch time to begin their meetings. The Blue Ties will have their meetings in the morning then attend their regular PE lessons. The Red Ties will attend their meetings in the morning, then have the afternoon for self-study in the holding room.

Our Grade 9 geographers have fast-forwarded in time from the first (Neolithic) Agricultural Revolution to the second (British) one, which was linked to the massive changes and innovations of the Industrial Revolution. How have each of these big changes in farming affected population growth, and why?

This week our Grade 10/11s are continuing to apply the skills of close reading, corroboration, and evaluating bias, as they begin four case studies, about colonialism in Ghana, Kenya, Algeria and the DR Congo. They will lead the seminar discussions about their own countries, comparing the diverse colonial experiences and issues that arose in these regions.

Our Grade 11 AP geographers are focusing this week on the environment and social impacts of the various agricultural practices we’ve studied, and how these impacts can vary widely between developed and developing countries. We’ll also be studying the many challenges and opportunities of contemporary agriculture.

Mathematics with Mr.Guo 数学

Grade 10 students tried to calculate the standard deviation and variance of a set of values both manually and using their calculators, then interpret the result to gain a better understanding of the data. They learned to identify sampling methods, and recognize bias in samples and surveys.

Grade 11 students focused on finding the probability of an event given the occurrence of another event and probability of an event using Binomial Theorem. They solved problems using various concept and strategies that covered in this unit.

Grade 9 students used angles of elevation and depression to solve real-world problems. They tried to construct a Right triangle according to the questions, and using trigonometric ratio to solve the problem. Each one of them made a clinometer using the material provided, and they divided into two groups using random numbers to work on a group assignment.

九年级学生使用仰角和俯角来解决现实世界的问题。他们试图根据问题构建一个直角三角,并使用三角函数比来解决问题。他们每个人都使用所提供的材料制作了一个测斜仪,然后他们使用随机数分成两组去完成小组任务,他们在户外完成了测量,并根据数据进行了计算。

本周,9年级的学生进一步学习了“象征”这种表现手法。通过训练,学生们发现身边任何事物都可以赋予它象征意义。更令人欣喜的是,学生们不是拘泥于固定的象征意义,而是能够多角度思考,赋予事物独特意义。学生们初步掌握了运用象征手法的技巧和规律,并尝试用此种手法作文。除此之外,本周还对第一单元测试卷进行了讲评,学生们有机会通过订正错误来查漏补缺,并反思在学习中存在的问题。

This week, grade 9th students learned more about symbolism. Through training, students find that everything around them can be given symbolic meaning. What's more gratifying is that students are not rigidly stuck to the fixed symbolic meaning, but can think from many angles and give things unique meaning. The students have initially mastered the skills and rules of using symbolism, and try to write in this way. In addition, this week, the first unit of the test paper was commented, students have the opportunity to correct mistakes to fill the gaps, and reflect on the problems in learning.

English Language Arts with Ms. Jia and Ms. Jenn 英语语言文学

In ELA, students are heading toward the end-of-unit exam that will happen next week. This week, Blue Ties and Green Ties participated in Socratic Seminars. The Green Ties focused on The Complete Maus, the plight of the Jews during the Holocaust, and how survival impacted the rest of their lives. The Blue Ties focused on the different ways that people love each other at different stages of their lives. The texts included in the discussion were West Side Story and Romeo & Juliet, as well as various short stories and poems. Red Ties spent the week filiming scenes for their upcoming dystopian short film, and Creative Writing students focused on how to use the setting in a narrative to set tone and create problems for the protagonist.

Chinese Literature & Culture with Ms.Emilia 中国文学

From this week, grade 10 students have started the unit of Chinese classical literature. We have learned from the book of songs, the first collection of Chinese poetry, about the classification of Poetry -- Guofeng, Daya, Xiaoya and Song, and the literary expression techniques in the book of Songs -- Fu, Bi and Xing, and studied the poem "Meng" which is a love story of an ancient girl who is beautiful, brave and capable. Next week we will continue to study the book of songs.

本周起,10年级学生进入中国古典文学作品单元,我们从中国第一部诗歌总集《诗经》学起,了解诗歌的分类——国风、大雅、小雅和颂,《诗经》中的文学表现手法——赋、比、兴,并学习了《卫风 氓》这首诗歌,感受了一个爱丽、勤劳、坚强的古代女子的爱情故事。下周我们会继续学习《诗经》。


Grade 11 students have learned one of the most difficult parts of modern Chinese Grammar - the division of multiple repetition sentences. Through the "three-step" method, we first find out the clauses, then determine the hierarchical relationship of multiple repeated sentences with the help of relevant words, and finally divide the main and secondary levels. To master such language analysis questions makes students feel very successful, and grammar is also very interesting.

11年级学生学习了现代汉语语法中最难的部分之一——多重复句的划分。通过“三步法”,先找出分句,再借助关联词确定多重复句的层次关系,最后划分主要和次要层级。能掌握这样的语言分析题让同学们感觉很有成就感,语法也是很有趣的。

The Art students took a break from the regular lesson to practice something that all art students need to know how to do: gesture drawing. Being able to capture the pose and feeling of person's position is essential. As most of the students have been needing to draw people for their summative project, this could be included as their required technical studies. 

本周在艺术课上,学生们暂时跳出了常规的课程学习,练习了一些所有艺术专业学生都需要熟练掌握的技巧:手势绘画。最关键的技巧在于能够捕捉到人的姿势和感觉。由于大多数学生在他们的总结性课题中选择画人,这可以作为他们需要掌握的技术学习。 


Gesture drawings allow students to learn two major strategies in art: 1) sketching, and 2) layering. 手势绘画主要让学生学习两种艺术策略:1)素描 2)分层


Too often younger art students feel that they must make all of their paintings and drawing perfect. This is not true and can't be true if the students are trying to develop their skills rapidly. Rather, learning the process of drawing quickly can help students learn to create correct proportions.

年轻的艺术学生常常觉得他们必须把所有的画都画得完美,但这是不正确的,学生不可能快速发展他们的绘画技能, 但快速学习绘画过程则可以帮助他们学会创造正确的绘画比例。 


Once the proportions are correct, then the students can begin layering their techniques. This traditionally means drawing shadows, then lines, the shapes, the realistic forms -- all on top of each other. Drawing in layers also shows the development. Erasing is not allowed. There's simply not enough time to start over.

一旦学生们掌握了正确的绘画比例,那么接下来就可以开始学习分层技巧。从传统意义上来说,这意味着画阴影,然后是线条,形状,真实的图形——需要逐步掌握。同时分层也需要较高的绘画技巧,不允许擦除,因为根本没有足够的时间重新开始。


Meanwhile, Red Tie Max has focused more on creating concept drawings (see image above). This strategy of drawing relates more to his industrial design interests, in which an object is visualized in the 3-dimensions by drawing it from all angles. Adding the toned paper underneath, as pictured adds the added benefits of exploring light and shadows.

This week we get into the training room after our climbing from the past few lessons. Now it's all about learning how to develop a hobby to use the training room. We started our lesson by telling the students about the important of working out and health benefit from it. I have got to introduced the students how to use different equipment and what are the suitable weights and details of all the equipment in the gym. Q/A session to let the students asked few questions about what they need to know and how different equipments and weights make an effect to their health. Students were also allow to tried it out how to uses all these equipments and how many repetitions and sets that they should do. So far the students showed their interest to know more about multiple equipment and we will continue to work on workout plans. 

本周在体育课上,在上完几节攀岩课之后,我们进入了器械训练室。现在学生们主要学习如何利用训练室来形成自己的爱好。我从告诉学生们锻炼的重要性和锻炼对健康的好处开始讲解,给学生们介绍了如何使用不同的器械,以及健身房里所有器械的合适重量和使用细节。我通过问答环节,让学生们了解了不同器械和不同重量对他们身体健康有什么影响。学生们被允许尝试使用不同的器械,重量以及如何重复设置,到目前为止,学生们对使用多种器械表现出了 很高的兴趣,我们将根据学生们的爱好和选择继续制定锻炼计划。

Greetings!

This week the students completed a Physics Challenge based around our Unit on Structures and Physical Forces. The students were given a grid and had to get a ball to move from the top left-hand corner to the bottom right-hand corner. The ball had to take at least one minute to get from the top to the bottom as well. The students were given some supplies but were allowed to utilize other supplies as well. This challenge seems easy on the surface but quickly the students began to realize that things were not as easy as they appeared.

大家好!本周在物理课上,学生们完成了一个以我们所学单元为基础的关于结构和力的物理挑战。学生们拿到一个网格,必须让球从左上角移动到右下角。球从上到下至少需要一分钟。学生们可以使用一些现成的或其他的辅助品 。这个挑战表面上看起来很容易,但很快学生们开始意识到事情并不像表面上看到的那么简单。


The students learned to go from 2D to 3D designs. Some groups started to build contraptions with loops. Some groups built tracks using desks and chairs. There was some frustration but I believe there was also a lot of learning and a greater appreciation for the creations of ancient civilizations as well. 

同时,学生们学会了从二维到三维的设计。一些小组开始建造有环的装置,一些小组用桌椅搭建铁轨。虽然学生们会遇到一些挫折和挑战,但我相信学生们从中会学到很多,并提高了对古代文明创造的赞赏。


Some students had to learn to let go of the designs they had worked on for days and start over. This is a difficult process for some of the students so I am grading them with their efforts in mind. On Friday we will take time to reflect on this project and also watch some interesting videos of modern interpretations of this classic Physics project. 

有些学生不得不学会放弃他们已经工作了几天的设计,然后重新开始。这对一些学生来说是一个挑战。所以我在评分的时候侧重于他们的努力和想法。周五我们对这个课题进行了反馈,并观看了一些有趣的视频,用现代的视角来解释这个经典的物理现象。

This week, students completed the rest of their unit on Kinetics. Then they did a simulation,  examined proposed reaction mechanisms to determine if there was a match between observed experimental data and constructed rate law expressions. Students learned to identify any intermediates or catalysts that are included in the reaction mechanism, as well as the rate-determining step, and be able to justify their hypothesis. 

本周,学生们完成了动力学的剩余部分。然后他们做了一个模拟实验,检验所提出的反应机制,以确定观察到的实验数据和构建的速率定律表达式之间是否匹配。学生们学会识别反应机理中的任何中间体或催化剂,以及速率决定步骤,并能够证明他们的假设。


Next week, students will have a test on Kinetics. After that they will move on to the last unit “Equilibrium”.

ECA students explored mechanism of fireworks shining with so many beautiful colors and properties of water. Have you thought about how many drops can fit on a penny?

This week, all G10 and G11 students showed something to me about personal essay. Ideas are always most important, so G10 can write bilingually because language should never be the obstacle to express thoughts. I'm glad that each student wrote about their own unique experience, including playing golf, developing interest in fitness, helping children in impoverished area, singing, skiing, etc. I'm excited to read the first draft of certain students, and also helping them improve the essay.

本周,所有G10和G11的学生都展示了一些关于大学申请文书的内容。文书的角度总是最重要的,所以十年级可以用双语写作,因为语言绝不能成为表达思想的障碍。我很高兴每个学生都写了自己独特的经历,包括打高尔夫球、培养健身兴趣、帮助贫困地区的孩子、唱歌、滑雪等,一些学生的初稿读起来很有新意。同时我也正在帮助他们改进文书。


In TOEFL classes, G9 and G10 continued to work on listening and writing and G11 reviewed the rubric of speaking (Task 3) and evaluated each other's performance according to three categories: delivery, language use, and topic development. Many G10 and G11 students have already registered TOEFL tests and set goals.

在托福课程中,G9和G10继续学习听力和写作,G11复习了口语标准(任务3),并根据三个方面评估其他人的表现:语言表达、语言使用和话题展开。许多G10和G11的学生已经注册了托福考试并设定了目标。
