Our Weekly Update is an opportunity for us to share all of the great learning experiences that take place both in and outside of our classroom, and is a testament to our commitment to communication with our parents as well as the community.

From the Director 项目主任总结


Baishan AWS students completed the second of two Oxford Language Assessments. These assessments help to measure students' use of English and listening growth over time. As a responsible school that continually seeks feedback to ensure that we are constantly improving, these data will be used to also measure our school's effectiveness, starting with Grade 9.

白珊·安妮高中的学生本周四完成了本学年第二次牛津英语语言评估测试。每学年学生们将会参加两次英语语言等级评估测试,这些评估将有助于衡量学生在英语使用和听说等方面的进步。作为一所负责任的学校,我们不断寻求教学反馈,以确保我们自身的不断提高,这些数据也将用于衡量学生从9年级入学开始在学校的教学效率。


This coming next week will be very exciting with a variety of activities. Baishan AWS will join other schools by encouraging reading and writing during Literacy Week. Many of our students have been working hard with the Baishan campus production of the musical Singin' in the Rain. All of the students and faculty will have an opportunity to see this major performance during the day Wednesday, April 21st. Additionally, all of the students will have a special guest professor give a seminar on the important steps necessary to securing a place in the most appropriate university.

Literacy Week文学周

Baishan AWS will have a week dedicated to literacy as part of our commitment to instill a love for reading. Several events have been planned by Ms. Roth and Ms. Jia for this coming week that will encourage both students and faculty to appreciate the power of reading. 

作为我们致力于灌输热爱阅读的一部分,白珊·安妮高中下周将有一周时间集中进行文学教育。 Ms. Roth and Ms. Jia 为下周的文学周计划了几项活动,鼓励学生和教师们都欣赏阅读的力量。


Morning Advisories (08:00 - 08:15) will be dedicated to DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) all week. Both students and faculty will be required to pause everything else and read from a book of their choosing. Students have been encouraged to select their book this week so they are ready Monday.

All students and faculty are encouraged to dress like an author or book character on Tuesday, April 20. Students from Baishan AWS and QAIS will all have the opportunity to celebrate their favorite writer during the day instead of wearing their uniforms.

In the spirit of sharing the love for reading with younger students, all Baishan AWS students will have Reading Buddies. We thank Baishan School kindergarten for the opportunities of partnering with the young students twice during the week. This will surely be a meaningful experience for both ages.

Our Baishan AWS students Mary, Tracy, Rain, Jessica, and Katherine, as well as AWS Tacoma Red Tie Sukie have all worked hard to produce this year's musical Singin' in the Rain. All of our students and faculty have been invited to see this show Tuesday.

All Blue and Green Ties completed their second Oxford language assessment during the morning of April 15. The Red Ties completed the assessment in the afternoon. Data will help students see their growth as well as inform the school of its affectiveness over years.

Our Grade 9 Geographers are learning more about quality of life indicators, and navigating increasingly complex data – this week, the full data set underlying the UN’s 2018 HDI rankings – to evaluate what stories the numbers tell. What’s the best and more accurate way to measure development? And what red flags emerge in the data that should worry us?

Our Grade 10/11 Historians negotiated their own system of alliances to figure out and reenact what went very, very wrong. Next, we go into the trenches.

This week is FRQ Bootcamp in APHG. Our Geographers are writing 12 FRQs (Free Response Questions with a 25 minute time limit) and getting quick feedback on them, in one very intense week. We’re aiming for responses that are more consistently specific and accurate, and make better use of course vocabulary.

Mathematics with Mr. Guo

数学课


Grade 9 students started a new unit of study, using Statistical method to analyse data. We revised some essential terms in Statistics, including mean, mode, median, range, and etc. They learned to find quartiles and interquartile range and draw a box-and-whisker plot to display data. They tried to describe and compare sets of data using the measure of central tendency. They used linear regression function on their graphic calculator to model bivariate data as well.

Grade 10 students started a new unit of study, Trigonometry, an important topic in Algebra II. First, we reviewed simplifying square roots and Pythagorean Theorem. Then students learned to write sine, cosine, and tangent ratios and use trigonometric ratios to find sides and angles of right triangles.

Grade 11 students reviewed their knowledge of functions. They tried to find the domain and range of the function using graphic or algebraic methods. We also learned the definition of even and odd functions, increasing and decreasing intervals, local and absolute maxima, and minima. Then we looked at a few key essential functions covered so far, their graphs, and the properties of each function.

Life is often challenged with a variety of choices when faced with the choice of life and death. How to make the right decision? This week, grade 9 students went back to the Warring States period through time and space again, went into "Fish is something I desire", and listened to Mencius' discussion on this topic. Through learning, students understand that although life is valuable, the value of life is not only to "live", but to make it meaningful. They also were taught to understand that it is this spirit of "sacrifice one's life for righteousness" that motivates generations of people with lofty ideals to strive for the just cause for life.

人生常常会面临各种选择,当面临生死抉择时,该怎样做出正确的决定?本周9年级的学生们再次穿越时空,回到战国时期,走进《鱼我所欲也》,倾听“亚圣”孟子对这个话题的论述。通过学习,学生们明白了生命虽然可贵,但生命的价值决不仅仅停留于“活着”,而在于使它有意义,也理解了正是这种“舍生取义”的精神,激励着一代一代的仁人志士为正义事业奋斗终身。

It's the last week of Unit 3 in ELA and students were hard at work putting finishing touches on essays, submitting corrections on the work completed during the unit, and gearing up for Literacy Week, which starts on Monday! Students in each grade level worked their way through the writing process, from brainstorming and planning, to drafting and getting feedback, to incorporating feedback into revisions, and finally to proofreading before submitting. Each and every student completed the process, setting distractions aside and tackling the hard work of writing. In ninth grade, students completed comparative analysis essays on the topic of how love is depicted in fictional texts. Tenth graders wrote critical reviews of the graphic novel Maus. And, in eleventh grade, students wrote thoughtful and analytical reader responses to the novel 1984. It was a proud week for students and teachers in ELA classes! 

本周是英语语言文学课第三单元学习的最后一周,学生们都在努力完成论文的整理工作,并对本单元内未完成的作业任务进行了提交和更正,同时为下周进行的语言文学周做好准备!每个年级的学生都在非常努力地进行文章写作,从头脑风暴和写作大纲,到起草和老师的指导反馈,再到根据老师给出的反馈进行修订,并在最后提交前进行校对。本周同学们把文学课上的其他的作业暂时放到一边,集中精力进行了写作。每位同学都非常认真地完成了这个写作过程。九年级的学生完成了关于爱情如何在小说文本中体现这个专题的比较分析文章。十年级的学生们对《鼠族》这部漫画小说进行了批评性的评论。十一年级的学生们在经过深思熟虑和深刻分析之后,写了一篇关于小说《1984》的读后感,老师们为学生本周在英语语言文学课上的努力和成果感到骄傲!

The students of Grade 10 imitated the Book of Songs by creating poems and posters. They completed this assignment excellently, showing their amazing literary and artistic talents. Learning classical literature can not only improve their literary appreciation ability, but also help them cultivate their creative ability and artistic perception ability. This week, we also completed the study and exploration of the representative work of Yuefu of Han Dynasty, Peacock Flying Southeast.

10年级同学仿照《诗经》创作诗歌,并制作出海报,出色地完成了这项作业,展现了他们的文学艺术才华。学习古典文学作品不仅可以提高他们的文学鉴赏能力,也可以帮助他们培养创作能力和艺术感知能力。本周,我们还完成了汉乐府代表作品《孔雀东南飞》的学习和探究任务。


The writers of Grade 11 began to enter the unit of writing training. This week, we learned the writing method of narration, how to write scenery and express feelings, and how to write people and events to express our views and feelings. They shared their works, praised the highlights and excellence, and put forward sincere suggestions for revision. Through continuous learning and improvement, everyone's writing ability will be improved.

University Guidance & TOEFL with Ms. DU

This week, in university guidance class, I emphasized the importance of academic performance to the college application again and introduced many academic competitions and events which will take place in the following months. First, I handed out some brochures to each student and let them read and choose at least one competition or event they were interested in. Glad that a few students showed great interest and decided to attend the Canadian Chemistry Contest and Junior Science Olympiad of Canada. Also, six students are planning to attend the World Youth Economic Forum in the summer.

本周,在大学指导课上,我再次强调了学业表现对申请大学的重要性,并介绍了接下来几个月将举行的许多学术竞赛和活动。首先,我发给每个学生一些小册子,让他们阅读并选择至少一个他们感兴趣的比赛或项目。很高兴有几个同学表现出极大的兴趣,决定参加加拿大化学竞赛和加拿大少年科学竞赛。此外,还有6名学生计划在夏季参加世界青年经济论坛。

Max, our Advanced Painting student, is shown completing one of his weekly assignments that help satisfy his illustration portfolio.

As part of the Comparative Study unit, all students are preparing for their final artwork. The Drawing students are focusinging on dry mediums, such as pencil and charcoal, while the Green and Red Tie Painting students are required to use wet materials, such as watercolor and acrylic paint. All students are encouraged to discover the interesting combinations of both.

This part of the preparation challenges the students to investigate various compositional designs -- ways of placing the drawings and subject matter within the space. Red Tie Zoey is shown working on her 2nd study. She'll decide which design is best for her personal expression, then move forward with that chosen composition.

As a reminder, the student artworks will incorporate all of their artist and material studies from this unit with their self-selected idea.

Physical and Health Education with Coach Faamamafa

After a week of Spring Break, the students were challenged to a fitness task that had them move around and develop their endurance. Students completed their fitness tasks in which students worked individually, in pairs, and in teams. Students seemed to enjoy the various exercises and games. Everyone finished with a healthy stretch. Hopefully the students were able to burn some calories during this week back from holiday.

春假回来后,体育课上我们做了一些健身运动,让学生们动起来,锻炼他们的健身技能和耐力。本周我们完成了一项全面的健身任务,学生们必须完成独立,成对以及团队的任务。学生们都很喜欢这些练习和游戏。最后,学生们在运动和游戏之后,进行了有效的伸展运动。学生们在体育课上享受到很多乐趣,最重要的是他们从中学到了很多技能,并在这个过程中消耗了一些热量。

Physics with Mr. Kytle

This week the students are reviewing for their exam on Physical Forces and how they impact movement. The students spent Monday working with definitions of key terms and playing a review game. On Thursday, we went through a series of review questions and exercises to help them finalize their understanding of key concepts. On Friday the students will have their exam. 

本周在物理课上,学生们复习了力以及它是如何影响运动的知识,并进行了单元考试。周一学生们复习并强化了一些关键的术语和定义,并在游戏中进行强化复习。星期四,学生们进行了一系列的题目分析和练习,帮助学生最终确定对一些关键概念的理解。星期五学生们进行了本单元的考试。


We are also working on preparing for an egg drop project. The students are using an application called Tinkercad which will help them to design components we will use to construct a contraption which will protect the eggs as we drop them. I have asked the students to start looking for cardboard and other materials to use to help them in their design efforts. We will discuss this in more detail next week.

Also, we have received permission for our Physics Field Trip to the Hisence Science Museum. We will take the 29th of this month to go and explore the museum. I know that the students and I are excited about this prospect and are looking forward to this event.

This week, AP chemistry students completed the overview of two units. At the same time, they were working on MCQ and FRQ questions by topics.  So more practice questions can help them get reflecting and better preparation. Also they did a mock exam for MCQ using 2016 past paper.

这个星期,化学的学生们,完成了两个单元的复习。并且,他们通过做选择题和问答题的练习,帮助他们做知识反馈,更好的准备考试。同时,学生们也做了一份2016年的真题选择题部分,来模拟感受考试。


From now on, students will be busy with doing MCQ & FRQ practices and both in-class and out-class.
