See You All Soon

The spring in April breeze brings all colors back and everything is flourishing. Recently, we are excited to hear the official school reopening plans announced by the Shandong Provincial government. It means our reunion in school is fast approaching!

During this special time, we strive to facilitate students' growth through a wide range of online teaching. We not only aim to strengthen their academic ability, but also help them build a strong body, and nurture their love for nature and life. Dear AWS Students, please continue to discover and grow through learning every day.

With everyone’s eager expectation, the longest winter vacation will come to an end. We have been waiting for this moment for so long, from early spring to late spring, witnessing the blooming leaves turn into emerald green. Now, we are ready for your return! See you all soon!

01 Greeting from Mr.Hinman

Dear Baishan AWS Parents and Students,

We are in active communication with the Qingdao Education Bureau regarding the timing and procedures to start back to school. We will provide any news as soon as we have it available.

We are looking at our planning for when students return to school and want to share the following steps that will be taken to make the most out of our remaining time for this school year.

Parents will receive an interim report card this week. This document will detail current progress, work completed to date, and current grade attainment as of the date of printing.

The week after we return from school, we will conduct English language assessments to get a clear baseline of the current state of our students capabilities in Reading and listening in English.

Teachers, working with students and families will create goal setting plans for each student, which will detail individual goals to be completed by the end of the school year.

Students who are taking part in preparations for the Zhongkao exams will be provided with the required courses to prepare them in the remaining time available. We will provide more details as we receive them from Baishan's administration and the local government.

In the event that we see a large gap in student progress, preliminary planning is taking place for summer school remediation, in order to give our students the best possible start to the 2020-2021 school year. We will provide more details on this option as is necessary.

Art With Mr. Brant

Students completed their artist analyses and artwork studies of Norman Rockwell. Students will begin a new series of studies that celebrates Spring and the increasing opportunities to venture outside into parks. Inspired by environmental artists, including Nils Udo, Andy Goldsworthy, and Jane Balsgaard, students will be challenged to find natural material from outside to create interesting designs.

Also see the attached student artwork studies from Jordan M. (Starry Night by Van Gogh & Rosie the Riveter by Norman Rockwell) and Max S. (Perspiring Man by Norman Rockwell) from the past week.

 Humanities with Ms. Brauer

In World Geography, the 9s have started a study of migration. Why do people leave the places they live and move to other cities and countries? What effect does this have on our economies, health, and social networks?

In US History the 10s are continuing our study of the Civil War, and next week we'll look at the aftermath. Why was this war fought, and did our rebuilding efforts fulfill those goals and promises?

03 Students Voice

Since the outbreak of the epidemic, our lives have changed a lot. We used to have classes at school, but now we are learning online at home. Relying on the platform of modern technology, our online communication with our teachers is not a problem. We soon got used to taking classes and finishing assigments through the Internet. In my opinion, every student should form a good habit that we should dress as well as at school, and have a regularly study and rest schedule.

We "Suspend classes in school", parents still go to work every day, leaving early and returning late. So we should not only show respect to the front-line medical workers but also express our gratitude to the hard-working families every day, because their hard work has given us a stable life.

As students, we can't make great contributions like doctors and nurses but we can cherish our time, study hard, don't be lazy, don't be delay, and will become the pillar of our country and make our own contributions in the future.

In this special period, what I saw, heard and felt made me feel mixed. Through the Internet, I was sad and moved to see the life of the people in the epidemic area. Although they were suffering from misfortune, small people also have great contributions, ordinary people also have great love! Hearing that the front-line medical workers lacks protective equipment, I felt so sad. I just hate that I can't help them, so I gave some of my new year's money to show my heart. They work day and night, and fight their lives to save others, which is really great! Countless workers keep their posts and serve others with due diligence. The panic brought by the disaster can't defeat us. Everyone is working hard and we can win faster. For me, in addition to learning, I also need to exercise more. With a strong body, I don't get sick. It's also a little contribution to resist this disaster.

04 We Are Ready

The school purchased sufficient epidemic prevention materials, and each classroom is equipped with a  thermometer, each of which has been configured for morning and nigh temperature checks. Each classroom is equipped with sanitary supplies and masks. Teachers will check and re-stock every day.The school staff have undergone training on virus  prevention protocols and have been familiarized with the reopening plan. The daily cleaning and disinfection work of the cleaning team provides us with a healthy and secure campus environment.
