Friday Update for October 18th, 2019

Dear Baishan AWS Parents, Students, and Friends,

We are rapidly approaching the end of October, and our second month in school. We hope that our families will be able to attend the International Day event at QAIS this Saturday. We are also happy that many of our students will take part in this event, and learn the values of service and charity upon which the event is based.

We are looking forward to seeing you all next week for our parent-teacher conferences which will be held on the 24th and 25th of October. We will do our best to meet your scheduling needs, and work with our staff to be as flexible for our families as possible. Remember too that our first set of report cards will be sent to families on the 4th of November.

Each day we learn more about our students, and how they are learning. We do notice that students often have a great desire to play games on their computers. Our parents should know that we work very hard to monitor computer use, and want our students to take part in the “real world” as opposed to the digital one as much as possible. We hope that our families also will work to take part in the lives of their children in an active way over the weekends, rather than allowing kids to spend hours each week playing on a computer.

My dad had a small sign on our refrigerator when I was growing up. It said, “The most important thing to spend on your kids is time”.

Looking forward to seeing you all later next week.

Robert Hinman

Director

Math with Mrs. Hinman

In Accelerated Algebra II, students began their study of quadratics by analyzing the parabolas in video games. Students investigated the standard and vertex forms in a hypothetical "Water Balloon Contest." Next week we'll try out the air rockets at QAIS.

Science with Mr. MacKeigan

In our ninth grade Integrated Science/Maths class, we finished our unit on velocity and had a quiz and review assignment for that unit. In Maths, we looked at mid-points and distances on lines and planes.

In our tenth grade Integrated science class, we finished our unit on velocity and had a quiz and review assignment, and began to look at accelerated motion.

Humanities with Ms. Brauer

The 9th grade students had a challenge day, competing in teams to solve four puzzles that required them to apply their growing knowledge of plate tectonics and the structure of the earth. Achievement unlocked! We're moving on to landforms now...

The 10th grade has been studying Native Americans as a test case for evaluating historical sources -- which ones can we trust, and when do we have to ask more questions and find more support? How can we tell the difference between a reliable source and fake news?

Art with Mr. Brant

Students will spend this week comparing and contrasting their work to the works of other works of other artists.  These lessons will help build their reflection and analytical skills, while further developing their vocabulary and writing.

English with Ms. Roth

Students in English 9 spent the week talking, reading, and writing about family relationships. On our Library Day, students selected children's books that they'll read with their 2nd grade reading buddies next week. In class, they will be reading some travel blogs and discussing the trips they have taken in the past. They will also help to decorate the hallways of the school by writing profiles of famous authors.

In English 10, we're reading a memoir that tells the story of two pen pals--one in America and one in Africa. Next week, we will continue exploring the story while also beginning to write about our own experiences.

Coming up in November, we will start our own pen pal project with students at Annie Wright in Tacoma!
